"27 #1 singles = 1" - Beatles 1
Pros
Music that withstands time.
Cons
None.
Recommended it?
Yes
Nonexistence of time and generation gaps deflated has always been the main idea of Beatles music. I would never normally listen to any piece of music that was recorded before the 80s, but here I am with Beatles 1 CD case sitting in my lap, the disc in my computer?s CD-Rom drive, and I?m ready to review each track. I find this to be the ultimate, classic showing of timeless music. I am only fourteen, usually popping my Backstreet Boys and Christina Aguilera albums, yet I am proud to say that I also pop Beatles 1 in for a good listen. This is, by no means, a guilty pleasure for young people. You will not be disrespected for listening to the Beatles, no matter what age you are.
Now if I told someone my age that I listen to the Jackson 5, Partridge Family, etc (those sorts of older bands), I would be laughed at and looked upon as some sort of odd, alien life form. I?ve told plenty of my friends that I enjoy and listen to the Beatles music. No complaints, no gawking, no ?alien looks.? I hate to somehow degrade or put down my own tastes in music, but I honestly don?t believe that in twenty/thirty years when I tell my kids what I listened to growing up (BSB, Nsync, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera) that they will listen to it also. Instead, they will most likely giggle, laugh, or even gag and say ?mom you listened to that junk?!? I?d like to think that perhaps one day at least the Backstreet Boys will hold some ounce of respect, but I doubt it, and that?s very unfortunate.
But, let?s get onto the review of Beatles 1?
Jacket Cover
I?d first like to do a mini review of the jacket cover for the Beatles 1 album. There?s a reason for this, because I found it to be an interesting and unique attribute to the album. The front cover is a simple red color with a yellowish, big ?1? in the middle. In the top, left corner is ?The Beatles? (in their signature logo). On the inside cover is somewhat of a table of many numerical ones, in various different colors. At the bottom it says ?27 #1 singles = 1? The numerical one is as the front cover.
The remaining pages hold one track per each. They list the weeks/days at number one that the track spent at number one on the charts in both the U.S. and the U.K. It says the date that the track was recorded, and the top part of the page has various different record covers for the single (from the different countries). It is an amazingly useful and interesting contribution to the album. It helps with my rating of this album, also.
Tracks 1 by 1 (1 by 1, get it? Ugh, another bad joke..)
I?m going to give very brief descriptions of each track considering there are twenty-seven and I know you just hate reading such long reviews. I will also have a star rating for each song, one through five?five being best.
Love Me Do - Has a sound showing that this song is most of its time. Harmonicas and tambourines attribute to the track and catchy, rhyming lyrics. I can imagine them smiling while singing this song, don?t know why?
****
From Me to You - Very pop-ish?which means it is very much my type of music. One of my favorite tracks! Nice harmonizing, yet they then seem to throw in a bit of sass (through the tone of their voices) in the chorus.
*****
She Loves You - Hey, this is the one that?s always on the TV commercials for this album. That opening ?she loves you, yeah yeah yeah? (which is also part of the chorus) is irresistible to listen to. I absolutely love this track. It?s very hard to pick just one favorite on this album, so I?ll just say now, and again: this is one of my favorites!
*****
I Want to Hold Your Hand - Wait, I?m dancing?*pauses, gets up and boogies down* Ok, I?m back. I really like this one! I know this is one of their biggest hits, although they?ve had so many huge hits it?s hard to really estimate which held the most popularity and weight. Great beat, guitars are played perfectly?
*****
Can?t Buy Me Love - Not one of my favorites, but a relatively good song. I don?t know what it is, but it?s not quite as catchy as the others. The chorus is incredibly fun, sing-a-long-ish, but the verses aren?t as pleasing. But the factor of the meaning behind it is so used today?money doesn?t buy love. That?s something that should be remembered!
***
Hard Day?s Night - *Wait one moment while author of this review dances* Ok, I?m here! So, I guess you can tell that I enjoy the beats on this album? Yeah, definitely. I really like the lyrics, it?s about just being tired from working ?like a dog,? yet coming home to your girlfriend/boyfriend and not being able to sleep because of them. Cool!
****
I Feel Fine - Psst, guess what? This is one of my favorites. Nice beat, but I especially enjoy the lyrics. I can also specifically pick out (Sir) Paul McCartney?s voice, and I?m guessing that he was the lead singer of the band. Great voice!
*****
Eight Days a Week - I am unfamiliar with this song, but from first listen it seems like a very nice track that is characteristic of classic Beatles style. Very much a teenybop song, all about love. ?Oh I need your love baby, yes you know it?s true. Hope you need my love babe, just like I need you.? Ahem, that sounds like the Backstreet Boys, Nsync, 98 Degrees. ;)
****
Ticket To Ride - I know it?s bad to dislike Beatles music, but sorry?there?s always a ad apple in the bunch. At least, this is according to my musical tastes. Not one of my favorites, and I probably will not be listening to it much. It?s a bit monotonous.
**
Help - Yahoo! After the last dud, this surely lifted my spirits and didn?t dissapoint! Definitely among my choose of favorite Beatles songs. The chorus is unbeatable and irresistible. I mean, who can?t resist yelling ?Help!? That?s just awesome!
*****
Yesterday - Awww, how pretty. Written by (Sir) Paul McCartney originally, but with different lyrics. I learned this through MTV amazingly! Originally, the lyric was not ?yesterday? at all. It, in fact, was ?scrambled eggs.? I suppose as some sort of joke/gag song that McCartney had written. To think it turned into this amazing song! Somewhere in the top three of my favorites. Could this possibly be the Beatles tearjerker song? Yes!
*****
Day Tripper - Nice beat but not catching my attention as much as others. Again I am not familiar with this song from anywhere else. Probably one I will not be listening to much.
**
We Can Work It Out - A bit of a change from the above tracks. I believe maybe this is after the guys got a little older. Nice, much clearer. Beat is characteristic of the Beatles, except for the slowing down and speeding up of the pace. That?s pretty cool, I like that effect!
****
Paperback Writer - Opens with harmonized singing of track title. I like this one but it doesn?t rank with my favorites. The lyrics have little depth, it seems. Or maybe it?s just my interpretation of them. They harmonize the words ?paperback writer? throughout the song, and you know how I love when a group of guys harmonize. ;)
***
Yellow Submarine - I?m a bit confused here. I guess I don?t know the story behind this song. If one of you does, please leave the explanation and story in the comments section so I can better understand when I listen to this track. It?s a great, comedic (I guess since I don?t understand it) song.
****
Eleanor Rigby - Different for the Beatles! The guys? voices against violins instead of tambourines and strong guitar melodies are very nice. I enjoy this one, now that I?ve heard it. This is another one that I have not formerly been familiar with, but I do like it!
****
Penny Lane - I really love this song! It?s beautiful, the lyrics are lovely, and they harmonize so well. The melody and instruments attribute quite well, making for a great song. Love it, A++! One of my favorites!
*****
All You Need Is Love - Nice song, a bit on the boring side. I?ll pass on this one.
**
Hello, Goodbye - Catchy, but again, a bit boring. :-/ I?m hoping for a good one soon?
**
Lady Madonna - This one is pretty good, but lacks something. I can?t quite put my finger on it!
***
Hey Jude - Excellent! Now I love this song. I guess that if I were a young girl living in the time of the Beatles, I would lean towards liking Paul McCartney best. His voice is very pretty, and he?s definitely talented.
*****
Get Back - It?s getting away from the pop-py sound I like. But, it still deserves three stars for nice guitar playing.
***
The Ballad of John and Yoko - Cool song. But I?ve heard about Yoko Ono?s voice, and I heard it isn?t quite the best, so I?m glad that she didn?t sing here.
****
Something - Woo-hoo! I love the ?climax,? and how the song gets faster. But a bit slow before and after.
***
Come Together - I?ve heard this one before! They use it on a local car dealership commercial. ?Come together, right now! Over me.? I like this mysterious type sound, great vocals, love this song!
*****
Let It Be - *heart melts with opening piano notes* To me, it almost seems to sound like the opening to the Backstreet Boys? ?It?s True? on their new album, but ends up not sounding like that song at all. Second or third favorite ballad on the album.
****
The Long and Winding Road - Oddly appropriate for closing/ending song on the album. Pretty ballad, somewhat sad sounding. I like it, the vocals especially.
****
All in all I?d say that this is most definitely worth the $15 it costs. I feel like I?ve taken a piece of history and been able to enjoy it thirty-some years later. It?s amazing how this band generated these classic, defiantly rocking songs to become one of the most critically-acclaimed and most respected bands in the history of music. Four guys from Britain who changed the music world?forever (literally).
Now if I told someone my age that I listen to the Jackson 5, Partridge Family, etc (those sorts of older bands), I would be laughed at and looked upon as some sort of odd, alien life form.
