The basis of which all multiplayer games should be built upon
Pros
Too many to list! weapons, teamplay, graphics, and more
Cons
Single player leaves much to be desired, lobby doesn't always work
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Mediocre singleplayer is completely offset (and then some) by a fantastic multiplayer experience
Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is an outstanding game. I will only review the multiplayer, as the single player is pretty much average across the board for first person shooters. The multiplayer, however, is the best console gaming experience I've had since the launch of Halo 2.
Graphics
The graphichs in Battlefield are wonderful. Highly detailed textures and movements really show off this games sweet engine. The graphics are especially wonderful considering the scope of the multiplaer maps. These maps are HUGE, some taking a full 5 minutes to cross end to end on foot. Having that much detail spread out across that range is very nice to see.
Character Classes.
This game, (based off the Half-Life mod, Team Fortress Classic) lets you pick a class of character before you spawn into the game. The available classes are assualt, special op's, engineer, support, and sniper. Each class has its own weapons, devices, and ammo limits. These classes are extremely fair, meaning that few games I've played in have everybody playing as the same "superior" class. Additionally, some of the weapons are very innovative and extremely fun to play with. My favorite is the sniper's laser missle painter. To use it, hold down the right trigger on a vehicle or air unit untill the weapon locks. When the target is painted, a hellfire missle appears from off screen and attempts to destroy the target. This weapon really evens up a game that has multiple tanks, jeeps and helicopters.
Maps
The maps in Battlefield 2 uphold the glorious tradition of the Battlefield series. You must capture flags to spawn forward of your base. Each flag capture is worth points, many more than just kills will get you. Battlefield 2, however, takes game mapping to a whole new level. The maps are MASSIVE, which comes in handy with the new 24 player limit games. The level of detail given to each building alows the gamer to shoot out of the tiniest cracks in the wall, or take partial cover in a pile of destroyed 2 by 4s. I've always hated games where a pile of debris, which looks like it has holes in it, is programmed as one solid piece. Battlefield 2 designers took the time to make the shooting through windows, cracks, tall grass, sandbags, and water all ultra-realistic and phenominal. Also, because EA is very generous, you can download a multiplayer demo off of x-box live, so you can play full rounds against full version opponents on 1 map. This demo is unlimited, so give it a try for a few hours to see if you really want to commit to it. I heavily reccomend this game, unless you have a thesis due, because its extremely fun and addicting!
