Best Batman Game Yet!

Pros Excellent animation style graphics, immersive storyline, awesome sound
Cons Quirky controls, some levels easy, some ridiculously hard
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A fun game that shows what the GameCube can do-- rent it first though if your not a Batman fan.
Fans of the 1990's Batman cartoons rejoice! Batman: Vengeance will intrigue you for hours of gameplay.

The first thing you notice right away when starting up this game, is that UbiSoft, the creators, have done their homework. Every detail of the Batman cartoons -- his cap flapping in the air, the original voices and dark background music -- is recreated in this game almost flawlessly. On the first level for example, the opening "credits" fade in and out as you begin gameplay, making it seem as though your in an animated movie.

You play Batman of course, and the game offers a number of levels that challenge you. Not only do you get to fight bad guys, you can drive the batmobile and the batjet!
Dive off buildings to save falling victims-- grab them and shoot your "Batgrapple" (hook)-- and climb back up victorious. Oh yes, you've got your utility belt with all the toys too. Use Batarangs, smoke bombs, Batcuffs-- the whole nine yards.

This game will immerse you in the Batman universe-- the graphics are almost flawless, and the cut scenes are written so well, you can really enjoy watching them.
Joker, Mr.Freeze and several other criminals get their share of game time.

The sound is in Dolby ProLogic, and you can tell. Bullets and explosions fly around you in the proper directions--assuming you have a surround stereo system. The music fits perfect to help you live the Batman experience.

Many levels complete the game, and each builds properly on the other-- every one fills in a gap in the storyline, a nice touch.

Unfortunately, their are a few minor frustrations-- but enough to deserve mention. Only Batman fans will be willing to overlook them! The levels are extremely uneven in gameplay- some are very difficult (even in the beginning of the game), while towards the middle when levels should be more difficult, they are to easy.

The Batmobile and Batjet levels are ridiculously hard and only for the truly patient gamer. One small hit with a car or building, and you have to start all over. (It took me at least twenty restarts to complete the Batjet level). On the positive side, you restart at that level-- not at the beginning of the game.

Some of the graphics are slightly off as well. Although they are drawn to the best of detail, at times characters don't respond correctly to the laws of physics. For example, you are on the top of a building and knock out a thug-- he should fall off the edge. Instead though, he kind of "floats" unconscious in mid air. This kind of mistake would have been easy to fix, but was probably overlooked so that the game could be ready for the GameCube's launch date.

Finally, the controls are somewhat quirky. Batman was fairly easy to get used to. But some controls that work one way to do one function, work the opposite on other functions. (You aim your Batgrapple to climb buildings-- pulling back moves the crosshairs "up", pushing forward moves them down. When Batman is diving however, they reverse this scheme). Having one central way of controlling these functions would have made much more sense.

Overall, you can get past the games minor frustrations and it is enjoyable. The storyline, fun, and cartoon style are worth your time and make this a recommended title.
