The Bottom Line:
A fabulous mini version of the real game! Portable and easy to set up. Keeps the kids entertained for hours on end!
OK, admit it - who in their lifetime hasn't uttered those famous lines, "Look I win! Where? Over here, diagonally! Pretty sneaky Sis!" and who hasn't played Connect Four - the brainchild game of someone who thought combining checkers and Tic-Tac-Toe would be a good idea.
Over the years I've played more than my share of Connect Four. I still have my original game from the 70s, complete with the groovy box top. I've played it with my 4 kids countless times, so it was a no brainer that they would get me the Basic Fun Connect Four Keychain so we could have portable fun on the run.
As with some of the other Basic Fun keychains, Connect Four is an exact replica copy that can be played - rules are not included, but they are quite simple - be the first to get four of your colored checkers (black or red) in a row (vertically, horizontally or diagonally and you win).
The Basic Fun Connect Four Keychain is about 3" x 6" so it is a bit larger to lug around with keys - I often just toss mine into my handbag if I know I am going somewhere where my kids will want to be entertained.
It's made of a durable blue plastic that has held up for years and still looks brand new. The "box top" looks just like the one from the first version of the game. To play you lift the lid up and place it under the bottom of the keychain. You slide the yellow playing field/game grid and lift it up slightly to lock it into place. The black and red checkers store under the grid - you get 21 of each color. Bccause of the small size I suggest this keychain game for ages 9 and up - but it depends on your child's fine motor skills and ability to keep the pieces out of their eyes, ears, nose, mouth and any other opening they can find.
The checkers are tiny and can be lost easily. They should be kept away from younger children as they do pose a choking threat. Once someone has connected four and won, I find that it is easiest to turn the game upside down and dump out the tiny checkers.
The Basic Fun Connect Four Keychain is about 5 dollars and can be found easily online or at most retail chain stores. It makes a great stocking stuffer or life saver (for when you and the kids have to wait somewhere). Mine has saved my life and sanity many times - often you have to run out of the house and don't think to bring something with you to keep the kids busy. Because of my keychain addiction, I always have games on the go and the Basic Fun Connect Four Keychain always provides hours of fun and entertainment with the added bonus of being able to say, "Pretty Sneaky Sis!"
