Sheet changing is a snap

The Bottom Line:  Makes changing crib sheets a snap.
One of the smartest purchases I made for my babies is the Ultimate Crib Sheet. It's a combination waterproof pad with sheet material on top, and it has elastic straps that snap around the crib bars.

I knew nothing about babies before I had my own, but I quickly learned that they can spit up - a lot. Unless I wanted them to lay in dried-up formula day after day, I realized that I would be changing crib sheets frequently. If you have never had to change sheets in a crib, let me tell you that the process gets old very quickly. Then I remembered I had bought a couple of the Ultimate Crib Sheets, and I tried them out. It's so easy to change these sheets - just unsnap them and lift off - no need to lift the crib mattress. I have twins who are 10 months old, and anything that makes my life easier gets a gold star (well, in this case, 5 gold stars).

How it works

There are 3 straps on each of the longer sides of the sheet. They are about a foot and a half apart, give or take an inch. On the short sides, there is one strap each (in the center of that side). When my girls weren't mobile yet, I didn't even bother snapping them in place most of the time. If you have a puffy bumper, then the straps easily tuck under it if you don't want to snap it in place (I am sure this is not recommended by the manufacturer, but once again, I was trying to make my life easier!). Now that my girls are mobile, I do snap the sheets in, and it's easy.

The elastic straps are thin and white and not that obtrusive. On the longer sides of the sheet, they are about 4.25 inches unstretched, and can stretch up to about 10 inches. The straps on the shorter sides of the sheet have a shorter loop, so if you have thicker crib slats you might have a problem snapping those.

We haven't had any projectile incidents or other messy affairs in the crib yet, but I'm sure our day is coming. At least I know that changing the sheets can be done in a snap (literally and figuratively).

I recommend buying at least three of these sheets (per crib if you have multiples). I don't like to have to do laundry every day and it's nice to have a couple of backups. The sheets also make nice, soft, waterproof floor pads, good for tummy time, etc.

The only drawback that I see is that as far as I can tell, they only come in white. But you will typically put a regular crib sheet on the mattress anyway, which is what will show through on the side of the crib, so your nursery decor will remain intact. Your baby probably doesn't care what color sheet he lays on, and he's the only one who will see the Ultimate Crib Sheet since it lays on top of the mattress.

Other options

Another alternative that a friend of mine uses is a zippered crib sheet (search the web for Quick Zip crib sheets). You wouldn't need to attach this to the crib; the top just zips off the sheet base, and you can buy additional tops. I don't believe these double as waterproof pads, though. But they do come in colors!
