Much more than a crib sheet

Pros Very versatile, quick and easy to use, absorbent
Cons Vinyl backing can get damaged in the dryer if you're not careful
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  "Ultimate" is an apt description for this multipurpose crib sheet -- I recommend getting two or three of them
We bought the Ultimate Crib Sheet based on a friend's recommendation. Even though our baby currently sleeps in a Co-Sleeper (no crib bars; mattress is shorter than a standard crib's), we've found that the Ultimate Crib Sheet is great for many different things, and we now have three of them. We plan to keep using them when we get a regular crib.

Description

The Ultimate Crib Sheet is a flat, triple-layered sheet, with elastic bands and snaps positioned around the edge (three on each side and one on each end). Each elastic band goes around a crib bar and snaps back to the sheet to hold it in place. The bands on the end are longer and can be stretched to attach to the crib slats under the mattress. The sheet will only cover the top of the mattress and does not go down around the sides the way a fitted crib sheet would.

The top layer of the sheet is 65% polyester, 35% cotton (smooth to the touch, comfortable to lie on). The middle layer is 80% polyester, 20% rayon. The bottom layer is vinyl. The sheet measures 52 inches by 28 inches to fit all standard cribs.

What I like

1. It's very absorbent. On the Target website the sheet is described as being able to hold 4 cups (that's a QUART) of liquid! While we haven't had to test that (whew), our baby has had spit-ups and diaper leaks onto the sheet and the top layer feels dry to the touch only a minute or two later. The vinyl backing keeps any wetness from touching what's underneath the Ultimate Crib Sheet.

2. It's quick and easy to use. Although we do have three sheets for our Co-Sleeper, one night our baby had multiple leaks and we ran out of clean sheets. In desperation I used the Ultimate Crib Sheet by tucking the extra length tightly under the mattress. Despite the multiple layers of the sheet, it lies smooth and flat when stretched out (no bunching of the middle layer). I can definitely see how quick and easy it would be to change it on a regular crib -- just unsnap the old sheet and snap on the new one.

3. It's versatile. We have one on our couch and two on beds in different rooms for baby to sit or lie on. The vinyl backing is padded enough to use on our hardwood floors for tummy time. When she's sitting up and leaning forward, it catches any drool or spit-up that happens to miss her bib, so nothing gets on the bedspread or couch.

What I don't like

1. The drawback to the absorbency is that the middle layer doesn't dry that quickly, so even if the top layer feels dry, if you happen to sit on the same spot, you'll still get wet (kind of the way a diaper is still wet even though the layer against the baby's skin is dry).

2. This is pretty much my fault, so I'm not really complaining about the sheet itself. I forgot that the instructions say not to crowd the dryer when drying these sheets -- if things aren't tumbling freely, hot spots in the dryer can damage the vinyl layer. So the vinyl backing on one of our sheets now has a small area with that baked-on, honeycomb pattern you get from the dryer. I'm guessing that if too much liquid gets on that part of the sheet, it will probably leak a little. Oops.

The verdict

The Ultimate Crib Sheet, though not a necessity, is definitely a great product to have -- no struggling with a regular fitted crib sheet in the middle of the night; useful for tummy time and wet-proofing other fabric surfaces.
