For the turntable- challenged, Kill Rock Stars has released this diverse collection of cuts off various singles the label released between 1991 and 1994. This predominantly Northwest- flavored comp starts quietly with Elliott Smith's Some Song, then rages to a close with Unwound's Hating in 'D'. In between are strong cuts from Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, Pee-Chees, Team Dresch, and several others. What separates this from so many other mediocre compilations flooding the market is that it highlights the best song from each single, sort of like an indie rock version of one of those '70s and '80s K-Tel best-ofs. Outside this comp, however, most of these songs can only be found on the original Kill Rock Stars singles. --Adem Tepedelen

Songs in the Key of Life (1976) was the highest high point of Stevie Wonder's career. More sprawling than Innervisions and Talking Book, this two-LP-plus-EP was also less of a consistent stunner than either of those masterworks. That Songs retains an enormous amount of visionary relevance, though, is demonstrated not only in Coolio's borrowing of Pastime Paradise as a template for Gangsta's Paradise, but in the cold-as-ice synthesized string quartet of Village Ghetto Land. This is Stevie, so naturally that cut's anger is balanced by the ultra-buoyant I Wish, Sir Duke, and Another Star. The 2000 reissue boasts radically improved remastered sound. --Rickey Wright

For their fifth album, Brooklyn's Firewater has brought forth a set of covers. Led by bass player and vocalist Tod A, he provides accompanying commentary on why he was drawn to each of the eleven tunes. Except for one, all of the songs are united, in their original form, by a potent emotional voice. This allows Tod's ragged baritone plenty of room to punch and kick against the solid rough-hewn rhythmic underpinnings. The aforementioned exception is Sonny Bono's The Beat Goes On, which, as written, eschewed depth of character for slight but bright lyrical subservience. Appropriately, Tod was attracted to this number because of its bass line, one of the first he ever learned. While most of their board-minded brethren seem interested in exploring the more raucous end of the rock spectrum via so-called surf-punk sounds, these guys--who actually hang ten for a living--wax as mellow as mellow can be on their debut. Songs from the Pipe exudes a decidedly Californian vibe, with influences both expected (the Beach Boys) and unanticipated (1960s soft-psych types, like Love). While the trio never quite scales the heights routinely reached by those bands, it serves notice that this musical foray is more than just a gimmick. Nonesuch Records takes a page out of the Verve playbook, feasting two of its most respected players (perhaps popular isn't the right word) in guitarist Frisell and pianist Hersch, on a series of chestnuts. Frisell has, after all, made his name by casting a post-ironic net over the past (again, think of Verve elevating the similar-looking Charlie Haden to represent NPR's All Things Americana). But on last year's Thelonious, Hersch, a straight-ahead player who has nonetheless taken on inventive settings in the past, boasted an intelligently post-modern touch as well. Here, Frisell's trademark stereo effects are reined in a bit (an exception will be the opening take on Rodgers and Hammerstein's It Might As Well Be Spring), while the duo setting emphasizes the right hands of both players. The earth- worshipping revelry of 1977's frisky Songs from the Wood was far removed from the heavyweight progressive rock of Jethro Tull's early years. Taking a leaf from the book of Steeleye Span, Songs from the Wood is bright and festive as it mines a rich, green seam of ancient British folklore for inspiration.
