The Bottom Line:
If you're heart is set on a diaper pail, this is a decent one. My recommendation is to spend less and get a regular trash can with a lid.
I bought a Diaper Champ when I grew tired of buying refills for my Diaper Genie. The Champ came highly recommended by several friends and I've been fairly pleased with the purchase.
First things first--anything used to hold human waste is eventually going to stink. I don't care how fancy or expensive it is, no diaper pail is going to keep all of those unpleasant smells away. When I initially started using the Champ, I was impressed with how it kept the smell down, but it didn't take long before odors started seeping through.
The design is clever, and it's nice not to have to open a lid every time to throw away a diaper to let all of the pent up smell out. It's also great to be able to use my own garbage bags so that I don't have to panic when I run out of liners.
On the other hand, the design leaves for some unsanitary surface area. When my son was old enough to want to help with the disposal of his diapers, he often played with the Champ, touching all of the surfaces that his stinky diapers has just been on. Gross!
When my twins were born, I bought a cheap garbage can for their room to use until my toddler was potty trained. When that day finally came (hallelujah!!) I moved the Champ to the nursery. I used it for maybe a week before I realized that the cheap-o garbage can was containing the smell just as good, if not better, than the Champ, and the cheap-o didn't have nasty, germy surfaces exposed for the kids to play with.
So, the Champ now sits in my garage. I was nice while it lasted, and I didn't feel ripped off, but if we ever have any more kids, I'm going with a cheap trash can again.
