Diaper Chump

Pros Easy to use, can use any plastic bags.
Cons Does not contain strong smells, can be a hassle to clean, and handle can stick.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  The Diaper Champ was great when my son was smaller, but as he grew so did the smell and the Diaper Champ could not handle it.
As a father, I have found that the best way to deal with my son's dirty diapers is to hope my wife will change them. If the smell gets unbearable and I do change a diaper, it is nice to have something nearby to drop it into. The catch here is that it needs to be something that that prevents me from continuing to smell it, if not I might as well just throw it in the trash in the garage. The Diaper Champ served this purpose at first, but as my son started eating real food some unsettling and really smelly things started to happen in our house.

What is it?
The Diaper Champ is basically a trash can for diapers. They are designed so that the smell does not leave the can, so you can, in theory, leave it in the nursery until the bag inside it is full. What is nice about the Diaper Champ is you can use any bag you want in it, from garbage bags to grocery store bags they will all fit nicely and easily. Some of the other diaper pails have special bags you have to buy and this cannot only become more expensive, but much more of a hassle. At around $35 the Diaper Champ is priced somewhat cheaper than many of the other brand name diaper pails.

The Process
The Diaper Champ basically consists of two parts, the main body and the top drum or lid. To insert a bag you just depress a button on the side of the pail to open the lid and place the bag around the bag holder inside. It really is quite simple to change these things.

There is a small indentation at the top that you drop the diaper into. Once the diaper is in place you pull the little handle on top of the lid and the diaper is magically inserted into the bag inside the can. This is actually not magic, the diaper falls onto what appears to be a piston and when you pull the handle the piston flips over thus inserting the diaper into the bag. The indentation in the lid is empty again and you are ready for the next diaper.

Sooner or later that handle is not going to turn for you. This means it is full. Sometimes you can shake the entire pail and they will settle enough to get this last diaper in there, sometimes not. It is slightly annoying to have to deal with the one lone diaper that refuses to go inside. To change the bag out, you just push the button on the side to open the top and take out the bag. It could not be easier.

The Good
The Diaper Champ is simple to operate and being able to add just any plastic bag we want is a great convenience. This was also great at keeping out smells when my little boy was very little and only getting his food from his mother. I could recommend this diaper pail for those with smaller and less stinky babies.

The Bad
I am not sure how to put this delicately. When my son started eating real food his dirty diapers became something to fear. It does not seem possible that such a small boy could produce such a large and horrible smell. The Diaper Champ which had always performed wonderfully before was not up to the task of containing the smell from these recent atrocities. It got to the point where his room started to smell bad when you walked in and so the Diaper Champ had to go.

When this thing gets close to full it can stick. This requires shaking the entire pail to get things loose and may require actually handling the diaper again. This is a definite drawback.

The only other problem we had with this thing is that cleaning it can be a hassle. If you have a diaper that leaks it will leak onto the piston in the lid. Cleaning the piston is not exactly easy and requires removing the lid and scrubbing up underneath and is not something that is enjoyable.

Conclusion
This is a great little diaper pail if you have real small children. It is extremely easy to operate and to change out bags. Being able to use any plastic bag you want is also an added convenience.

Cleaning can be a hassle at times, but it is not too bad. There are a couple more serious problems though. Once it is full the handle can stick and you may be stuck with a diaper you have to take back out of the top of the pail. The other problem was that once my child got older it was really no longer suitable to use, because it could no longer contain his stench. Any of my future children will not have the Diaper Champ in their room.
