The Bottom Line:
Recommended for quality time during meals
My son and I have been having fun with this plate for some time now. Ever since he started insisting that he wants to eat on his own, we have been trying to find a bowl or plate that will make it easier for him to use utensils.
This is very close to that, but it is not perfect. Maybe it is just my fault that I have been only feeding him baby cereal out of it, but it doesn't seem that it would work better for foods of other consistencies.
The three leaf shape is advertised that it makes easier for the child to scoop up food with his spoon rather than pushing it around in circles. This is true enough, but the babies of his age (14 months) find chasing food with a fork as a game, only if they are really hungry they start picking up the food by hand. In any case, this part of actually getting the food on a spoon or a fork is fun for a kid this young and in this sense I think the plate is successful as a teaching tool. You have to bear in mind that this game won't last the whole meal and that the kid will eventually grab the food with his/her hands. Unless it is mushy and easier to eat with spoon. That is why I keep feeding him cereal out of this plate.
The other nice feature of the plate is it's edge. It is made of a non slip rubber, so it's quite stable and harder to flick of the table. The company boasts that the shape of the edge is hard for little hands to grip and throw on the floor. That doesn't stand. The first thing my son tried to do was to pick it up and throw down. He would have been successful if I did not prevent him. The shape is not going to prevent stronger babies to flick it right of of the table or highchair if they so desire. Do not be fooled with this statement.
You also get two quite wide spoons with nice fat rubber handles that fit perfectly into baby's chubby little hands. The shape of the spoons at first seems a bit too wide but the kids do not seem to have problem with it. My son enjoys a larger amount of food that comes into his mouth at first. Further into the meal, he just takes the amount he wants of it. The shape of the handle is good for either hand and he enjoys that frequently changing the hand he uses. Besides that it is decorated with fun little eyes so you can play with the kid during the meal.
Both plate and spoons are made from high quality plastic and rubber, also dishwasher and microwave safe. They are also recyclable and FDA approved for food. This set comes in a couple of colors: blue green, orange and bright red. You get two spoons in the set, which is a good deal since this is a bit pricey.
