Singer basically stole 200 dollars from me on this purchase
Pros
Easy to figure out, easy threading, portable.
Cons
Terrible bobbin system, weak gears, throws itself out of time often, most stitches don't work.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Not a good machine for beginners. Make mistakes on a machine that's durable enough to take it. Visit yard sales. Find a better built machine for $25.
I bought this machine because I trusted the Singer Company name and the price was decent. I'm new to purchasing newer sewing machines, but I'm not new to sewing. Singer included a page with my warranty information that stated "If you are dissatisfied, please do not return this product to the retailer where it was purchased. Rather, visit our website, contact us in an email or by phone, and we'll do everything we can to assist you." Now I was under the impression I had to deal with Singer if I became dissatisfied and wanted to return my machine according to this information. I had this machine for exactly 31 days before I realized it was a terrible machine. (details below) When I contacted Singer's customer service like they suggested, I was told I had to take it back to the retailer and they couldn't resolve my issues. According to the original paperwork, this was a blatant misrepresentation and a genius way for any company to scam a consumer. I will be contacting the Surgeon General's office.
Bad machine details:
a. The first time I threaded and tried out the machine on a lightweight piece of cotton, the brand new needle broke. I put in another.
b. After sewing about three times, the stitch locks wore out and it stopped making uniform stitches. Only the zig zag and straight stitches worked decently..and still not that well.
c. Timing threw itself out of whack every time I tried to change a stitch or start a new project. I know how to use a sewing machine, and have operated quite a few of them well. I was not threading the machine wrong, mis-adjusting tension or trying to sew anything heavy or complicated. This machine simply does not like to change stitches or projects.
d. The "sure fit floating bobbin" (supposedly designed to be easier to use) is a terrible bobbin system. It periodically decides to stop catching the top thread, therefore missing stitches.
e. Gears wear out too quick. I've done tech work on sewing machines, and this machine has too many plastic, easily breakable pieces to it. You WILL lose your money if you buy this machine.
