The Bottom Line:
Destined to become a classic. It's timeless style, quality, and reliability will someday make this a car well worth owning.
I purchased my 840 new in 1997. It was one of the last orders to be filled by BMW. Styling, fit and finish, attention to detail, engineering are classic German. The car has many features which were ahead of their time. It was a rolling tour de force in its day and only now are many of its features becoming commonplace.
The car was (as in the case of many classics) the pet project of an ego. In the 840's case, it was the pet project of the "then reigning" BMW president. The car was styled after BMW's very successful super car.
If you are looking for a street racer, or Corvette beater, this would be the wrong car. If you are looking for a car that will tour in grand touring style, with power, grace, reliability, reasonable handling, and the ability to turn heads; this is your car.
In an ironic twist of fashion, it was one of the most beautiful two door hardtops to have ever been designed - competing in an era of Nuevo chic four door sedans. Who would have thunk it! That, and its high price tag, finally doomed the car after stubborn resistance to let it die a graceful death.
If you find one of these, in a forest, within a glass coffin, admire it wistfully and wonder when fashion will once again honor the two door hardtop and one of its finest works of art.
