The Bottom Line:
There are lots of pricey scanners out there but if you're on a budget and want to start scanning, this is the perfect unit with few minor cons.
The BC72XLT scanner from Uniden is my first scanner and so far I like what I've seen.
As an entry level scanner, it set me back $120 CDN and was the cheapest around. By cheap I mean price only as this is a solid, well built and compact unit with range of about 10 – 45 + kilometers ( around here weather and the mountains limit reception ).
You can be scanning right out of the box with this unit but I had to keep the manual handy for some time as this seems to be a feature packed scanner. The features are nice but I don't care for the function button. You have to be extra careful it's on/off at the right time or it can cause adverse function changes. I found it a little complicated at first.
It comes with built in scan ranges to get you started but I found them to be off the mark in Canada, still it was a starting point. I can get Police, Fire, Ambulance, Peace Keepers, Marine, Air, Rail, Radio, Ham, and the odd cordless Phone. You can also take it to games and scan for the radios in use or the races or I just take mine all over the place scanning.
To program it is easy. The memory is divided into 10 banks with 10 slots to program in each bank = 100 channels. You can turn on /off any bank while scanning to focus in on interesting signals without holding on less interesting ones. Keep that in mind when programming and group the signals accordingly.
The battery life I find short at 1 day scanning with 2 AA's but it's made to accept reg or rechargables and will recharge in the unit with the provided power cord.
I'm more then happy with this as my first scanner and could still add a bigger antenna. The 100 channels is more than enough for me but some might want more. If your looking for a good starting point or mobil scanner that doesn't break the bank, this is a great choice.
