Solid PocketPC, great price
Pros
Solid product. Great features at 2/3 the price of the competition.
Cons
Wifi could take some tinkering. Battery life 2-3 hours.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Got everything. Well built. Fast and beautiful. Great deal at $375. Need patience with support and wifi.
SPECIFICATIONS
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/axim_x50v?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
VALUE
-As low as $375. Check http://slickdeals.net for occasional 25% discounts on Dell accessories.
-Competitors with VGA screens are in the $600s
QUALITY
-Comfortable and grippy back material
-Feels sturdy
-Feels lighter than the official 6.2oz weight
-Size is compact, just a tiny bit (.1") thicker than X30
-Screen resolution is ultra fine, and very easy to read. Color/brightness/quality is on par with modern laptops.
FEATURES
-Wifi, BT, VGA, 624Mhz, can't beat that.
-The VGA screen isn't fully utilized with factory settings. Things show up in great detail, but you still can't fit large web pages on the screen better than QVGA devices. You need to download a 'se_vga' utility (search it on google) to fully utilize it. Many web pages can then be browsed in landscape mode w/o sideways scrolling.
FUN STUFF
-Get a big CF card and turn it into an awesome movie/mp3 player. Divx movies can play at high-res and frame rate using 'Beta Player' (search it on google).
-Get a CF GPS unit and use it as a navi while driving.
-Surf the net or Remove Desktop into your desktop PC from any wifi connection.
SERVICE
Don't expect too much. Tried emailing them but got an automated knowledge base reply.
WIFI
Wifi was a bit confusing to setup, even for the experienced. I connected to my home Wifi, but couldn't connect at all to my work Wifi.
Update (12/3/04). I was able to get both work and home wifi to work. It comes with two wifi utilities but make sure you only have one enabled at a time.
BATTERY
Battery life on the standard battery is mediocre. Maybe 3 hours max w/o wifi, 2 hours w/ wifi. The cradle can charge a second battery so that could be helpful. The extended battery (2x thicker) sticks out obtrusively from the back. Few cases will work w/ it.
AFTERMARKET
As of today (12/02/04), the aftermarket for cases and accessories is still early stage. These X50's will sell well and I'm sure the aftermarket will pick up dramatically in a couple months.
Here are the things I plan to get:
- 1GB CF card (divx movies, mp3), fast 512 SD card
- CF GPS unit so I won't get lost as much when driving
- Hard case. I crushed the screen on my last pocket PC.
