Avery 05226 File tabs ? Excellent File Organization Tool

Pros Thick quality label made to last. Easy to install & remove on folder.
Cons Cost can add up if you have a very large amount of files!
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Great file organization product. Avery templates are free and easy to use. I highly recommend these to give your files a professional organized look.
What are Print or Write File Tabs?
They are simply used to label hanging file folders.
The tab that sticks out from the folder which labels the folder's contents.
A necessary item for those of us who organize our documents (Electric Bill, Mortgage, Insurance, etc.) in a filing cabinet.

The package consists of 24 white tabs. There are 2 tabs per page and 12 pages.

Per My Measurements:
Each page is 4 inches wide by 6 inches long, containing 2 full tabs per page.

Each tab is 2 3/8 inches long by 3 1/16 inches at the widest point.

The above measurement is prior to folding the tab in half. The tab folds in half to create a mirror image so two sides are visible when placed on file. The sticky backing holds the tab in place when folded. I have used these tabs for over 2 years now and the sticky backing has held perfectly. Also it aligns up easily when folding in half, there should be no sticky resin felt after folding.

When folded in half, the tab is now 1 3/16 inches long. This is the height at which the tab will be when inserting into the pre-formatted slots in letter sized files. Since the pre-formatted slots are located below a standard file's top edge, when properly installed the tab should stick above the file 9/16ths of an inch. This may not sound like much but actually it is.

Remember those terrible plastic tabs included when purchasing most file folders? They stick up about ? inch above the top of a file. These Avery labels stick up more than twice that.

I am able to fit two lines of printed text on these tabs. Looking at my filing cabinet now, which strictly uses these tabs, I can tell you I fit the following phrases on these tabs.

Real Examples of Tabs Printed in My Filing Cabinet

1) Municipal
Water/Sewer/Tax

2) Homeowners
Insurance

3) Social Security

4) 2005 Taxes/Papers

My tabs are printed with "Times New Roman" font / Font size is 16.

The above examples show one line and two lines of text and are replicated as they appear in my filing cabinet. I use the template located at Avery Labels website, which is free and located here:
http://www.avery.com/us/Main?action=software.BlankTPLProductSKU&catalogcode=WEB01&softwarecode=11543

Please copy/paste the above link, Epinions does not allow external links to work per policy.

This template is recommended for Microsoft Word.

If the link does not work or Avery changes their website, please go to www.avery.com and type "05226" in the provided search field to locate this template.

Additional Information Regarding These Tabs
They are 1/5th cut prior to folding. This is also the thickness of a standard index card. When you fold the tab it becomes twice as thick, similar to 2 standard index cards side by side in thickness.

As previously mentioned, I have been using these tabs for at least 2 years now. The sticky backing has remained in perfect shape with nothing coming undone and also the tabs have not frayed. All my tabs are in excellent shape!

Remember these tabs are recommended for laser printers. I am unsure if they will work with inkjet printers. If you are curious to know, try printing on an index card with your inkjet prior to purchasing these tabs. If it works for you, you may have success with these tabs.

The package states in small lettering and I quote: "Not recommended for color laser printers"

The tabs are locked in to a folder by sliding into the pre-formatted slots. The tabs can be pulled out of the slots and placed in a different location or different folder over and over again if need be.

I use the manual feed tray on my Brother HL-5140 Laser Printer to print text on these labels. I have never had a problem printing.

Expect to pay $5.50 per package at most office store locations. By clicking on "Compare prices" near the top of this page, you may be able to spend less than what I paid.

Thanks for reading my review.
