Neat Presentation and Versatile -- Avery Index and Postcards

Pros design template, nice white card stock, easy-separate perforations, variety of uses
Cons package specifically states to use in a laser printer
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  These white Avery index / postcards allow us the blank canvas to custom create a variety of pieces.
Our company uses these Avery Laser Index and Postcards (# 5389) for a variety of purposes.  It is convenient having blank 4” x 6” card stock that can be customized and run through the printer.

Description

This package of Avery cards contains 100 white cards, with two 4” x 6” cards per 8 1/2” x 11” sheet.  Avery describes the card stock as uncoated heavyweight stock.  The cards are micro-perforated for easy separation.  These are for use in laser printers (the product title is incorrect with the ink jet listing).  If you don’t have the correct template in your word processing system, Avery offers a free online download.

The package says this product works with current versions of: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Home Publishing, Corel WordPerfect, Corel Draw, Sierra Print Artist, Broderbund The Print Shop, and Broderbund PrintMaster.  Instructions for use are included in the package.

My Experiences

These Avery cards come in handy for a variety of purposes.  I use Microsoft Word to customize these bright white cards.  Simply open the Labels area in the MS Word program and select the 5389 template and “new document” to open a page featuring the card template.  The computer screen will display two blank 4” x 6” cards, one atop the other.  I type in and format my text, and it is easy to drop in graphic images such as logos.  When the card is designed how I wish it, I place the card stock into the printer and select “print”.  These cards are easy to separate from the full 8 1/2” x 11” sheet.  The perforations make for sharp folding and clean separation.

Avery says these cards can be used as index cards, postcards, or customized for other purposes.  One of our recent uses was to create a Contact Card of frequently used departments and personnel phone numbers and email addresses for our sales staff.  We customized the card with information and used color for the company name, email links, as well as the company logo.  The cards printed out great on our color copy machine (our computers are networked to directly print to the machine).

We took an extra step and brought the printed cards to our local Staples to have the cards laminated.  The lamination will keep these Contact Cards looking neat and professional despite frequent use.  The laminated cards also looked great in a folder of presentation materials handed out to each sales person.

As for using these for postcards, the Avery card stock is not as stiff or heavy as a U.S. Post Office postcard.  If you need a down-and-dirty postcard, then this stock may work well for you.  However, if you are looking to make an impression, then you might want to consider another alternative.  I have used the Avery 3” x 5” postcards, and did not have a problem with them traveling through the mail system.  We have not used the 4” x 6” cardstock as postcards.

Purchasing

Avery retails this item for $24.52.  A 100-count package of these cards costs $24.99 at Staples.com, or W.B. Mason offers them for $21.99 a box.

Summary

These Avery Laser Index and Postcards work well for our needs.  While we don’t use them as postcards, we do use them for a variety of marketing and office pieces.  It is convenient using the template to customize cardstock that can feed through our laser printers or photocopiers.  The finished product looks great.
