Not ideal for newborns - but great bottles!
Pros
Great bottles - good airflow, BPA free
Cons
Not ideal for a newborn, expensive
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
These are great bottles but you will need to buy more small bottles for a newborn which can get expensive.
This set includes a bottle brush, one 4 oz. bottle, two 9 oz. bottles, and 3 nipples (1 level 1, 2 level 2's). While at first it seems like a nice variety, one quickly realizes that only the 4 oz. bottle and level 1 nipple are appropriate for a newborn. It is crazy to feed a newborn from a 9 oz. bottle - think of all the extra air they have to suck in to get the liquid out! And the level 2 nipples are designed for infants that are at least 2 months old. I love the set and now have used each part - with a four month old - but think that if it's advertised as a newborn set, it should be more appropriate for a newborn - perhaps with 2 4 oz. bottles and 1 9 oz. or something to that effect.
Aside from this issue, the bottles are fabulous. I love Avent bottles, nipples, and pacifiers. They have a great flow and my daughter was easily able to transition from breast to bottle and back again with few problems. The bottles never leak and are easily cleaned. I wasn't crazy about the bottle brush included in the set though. It was OK but I bought a better one and keep this one in the diaper bag for on the go cleanings. It isn't spongy at all and I felt like it wasn't really cleaning the bottles effectively.
I would recommend Avent bottles to any mother that wants to freely switch between breast and bottle. While they are a bit pricier than some bottles, they work great at controlling air flow, minimizing upset stomachs, and essentially eliminating spit up. I used Medela bottles for a bit and my daughter was spitting up all the time. With the Avent bottles, I think she has spit up only once in four months!
