The Bottom Line:
Highly recommend this product for convience and safety.
I was originally given the Avent Steam Sterilizer as a gift before my first son was born. I thought sterilizers were a joke...besides I had a dishwasher - why would I need one? So, I took it back to Babies-R-Us for store credit. Well, I am currently 9 months pregnant with baby #2 and I bought this sterilizer.
With my son, I pumped a lot. In fact, we couldn't get the hang of breastfeeding so I pumped exclusively for 6 weeks using the Avent Isis. During that time, I pumped and pumped, but I didn't run the dishwasher every five minutes, so the pump was not sterilized in between washings and uses. (I know, I'm a bad parent.) Needless to say, my son came down with thrush. Was it because I didn't sterilize the bottle nipples and pump parts???? Honestly, I don't know. What I do know is that my peditrician said to sterilize EVERYTHING that touched his mouth or my breast for the next three weeks, just to be sure that he wouldn't be contaminated again. So, without a microwave steam sterilizer my only choice was to boil everything, like our mothers did. By the time I washed everything, got the water boiling, boiled everything for five minutes, then cleaned up I realized I had wasted so much time.
This time around, I am hoping to breastfeed exclusively. (Then again, issues do arise.) If issues do come up, I intend to be prepared with the Avent Microwave Steam Sterilizer. All I do is pour 7 ounces of water into the unit, turn the micro on for 4 minutes and walk away. (You have to leave it resting for 2 ore minutes before you open it as well. The lid locks on, which is really nice. (Some cheaper models, such as Luv'n Care's does not.) The things inside will stay sterile for 3 hours with the lid shut. Not to mention the sterilizer is dishwasher safe and you don't have to worry about melting things on the stove, or your oldest pulling a scalding pan on himself.
I have already used this sterilizer to sterilize my Avent bottles, nipples, and breastpump parts for the new baby. It holds 4 Avent bottles (9oz. or 4oz.) with all their parts. It also has a specially designed rack to hold the Avent Isis Breastpump. While it doesn't sound like it holds a lot, the bigger more expensive Electric Avent Sterilizer only holds 6 bottles and their parts. If you are just sterilizing nipples and pacifiers, it will hold a lot at once.
While these are still expensive (I think they are around $29.00 at Babies-R-Us), I bought mine off Ebay for $12.00 INCLUDING shipping! (What can I say, I'm a bargan hunter!) There are no parts to worry about breaking or losing, so it's a good investment. It will last as long as you need want it to - then you can pass it along to another Mommy to be.
