The Bottom Line:
I love it, and I would recommend it to all first time moms.
I bought the microwave steam sterilizer after my son developed thrush. Just like many moms, I was told that it was not necessary to boil bottles anymore. I was told that if I ran them through my dishwasher, that it should be sufficient enough. Well, I did that, and my son still came down with a terrible case of thrush. I began boiling all of my sons pacifiers and bottles (as my son's doctor recommended). It was such a hassle. I saw the Avent Microwave Steam Sterilizer and purchased it. I thought, it might be convenient.
This product is so simple to use. I use it daily to sterilize pacifiers, reusable plastic spoons, sippy cups, and my son's bottles. My son switched to formula at 7 months. I usually, sterilize bottles in the morning and make enough formula to last the entire day. I also, sterilize a few extra bottles just in case. I sterilize just before I make my formula. I don't leave bottles sitting in the sterilizer too long. Moisture and room temperature are breeding grounds for bacteria. The manufacturer recommends leaving them in the sterilizer no more than 3 hours after you sterilize them. I pour my formula into the bottles and refrigerate them and my extra empty bottles. When I pumped, I sterilized both the pump and bottles before each use. I use it to sterilize pacifiers and plastic spoons. When they are done, I place them on a rack so they can dry completely. After they are dry, I seal them in a ziplock bag.
This is one of the best purchases I have made. It holds taller bottles. You don't have to use only Avent brand bottles. You can sterilize four bottles at a time. The sterilizer comes with diagrams that show you how to place the different size bottles in the sterilizer so they fit. I use it on both Dr. Browns and Avent bottles. When I sterilize Dr. Brown's bottles, I simply, place all of the components in the tray and sterilize them. I do the bottles separately. It is so easy. It only takes 4-7 minutes (depending or your microwave wattage)!
It comes with two Avent 9oz feeding bottles. The sterilizer consist of 3 pieces. There is a lid, bottom, and tray with holes. The tray fits into the bottom, and of course, the lid goes on top. You must prewash your bottles. It is not much different than using a dishwasher, since they don't get every nook and cranny clean. Not to mention, even with my water heater at its highest setting, it did not kill all of the bacteria. If you need a bottle or pacifier, you can just wash it and pop it in the sterilizer. You don't have to wait through a long dishwasher cycle.
After washing the items you want to sterilize, you simply place the tray inside the bottom and pour 7oz of water into it. You can follow the diagram that comes with the sterilizer that shows you how to place the different size bottles or breast pump. It is really just common sense. You want to make sure that the steam can get to the object you are sterilizing. Taller bottles fit in slots at the bottom that make them slant at angle, so you can shut the lid. The lid snaps on. After you have microwaved it for the appropriate amount of time, you just let it sit for at least 2 minutes. This allows the steam to continue to work and also allows a cooling down period. The steam is very hot, and even after 2 minutes, I usually, let it sit a little longer. I have gotten impatient before, and I took it out of my microwave after the 2 minutes. It was very hot. You want to make sure that you always open it away from you. After you are done sterilizing, you just rinse it out.
I use it to sterilize my breast pump, pacifiers, reusable plastic spoons, sippy cups, and hard plastic toys (that my son puts in his mouth). This product is so handy and it works. My son has never gotten thrush again. This is the best baby purchase I have ever made. No regrets here! I use it all the time, and it was well worth the money.
Avent Express Microwave Steam Sterilizer II
Now, Avent has a newer version of the steam sterilizer-Avent Express Microwave Steam Sterilizer II. It holds 6 9oz bottles! Instead of the lid that snaps shut, the lid has snapping locks on each side. That probably, makes it even easier to open and shut. Items stay sterilized for up to 24 hours, if you don't remove the lid.
