I consider myself quite knowledgeable on car magazines. I have seen and read most of the magazines that are availible in the US for many years now. I know what I like and what I don't like about these types of magazines. Automobile magazine is a comparative new comer to the automagazine front. They try to cater to the average auto enthusiast and as result, don't have a specific focus. This is as opposed to a magazine like Sport Compact or European Car. This is not bad, since other top notch magazines, such as Motor Trend also cater to the average enthusiast. In general, these types of magazines are great. I like to be informaed of the latest models from Detroit, Europe, and Japan (although euro stuff is my fav!).
When it specifically comes to Automobile magazine, I feel that such a periodical is just not up to snuff compared to the major magazines like Motor Trend, Road & Track, and Car and Driver. Why do I feel this way? It is obvious to any auto enthusiast who picks up an issue of Automobile that the magazine is high class. However, it is high class in the quality of the paper and the glossy color photos. This kind of stuff is great for any enthusiast. I love looking at big color pictures of huge V8 Mustangs burning out. I like the feel of the smooth, glossy paper in my hands. What I don't like is everything else. I mean, their articles are well written, but they are from from technical. I want to know exactly why a car handles bad and how it can be improved. I also like my magazines to have features not in the other Big 3 (see above) mags. Automobile seem to always have the same tests as all of the other mags, either during the same month or even after the other magazine articles. I don't want to read old news. The other thing I like about car magazines is when they test out unique forms of transportation or give a first-hand account of some type of racing experience or specialized test. I don't this very often at all in Automobile. I see it also in Motor Trend and European Car. Plus, they don't seem to focus a lot on fast cars. There are a lot of sport ute and family car type comparisons. I like speed and agility. Give me a 911 Turbo any day over a an M-B ML55.
Overall, I don't think it is worth spending money on this magazine. It is great to look at in the store, and on the rare occassion when they do put out an original issue, then one should definitely buy it. it should also be mentioned that I like my automoible magazines more on the technical side and for those who are just casual followers of "automobile-ness", I would recommend it. It isn't a hard read and you won't be bashed over the head with technical terms.
