I'm hooked on shredding! This little unit is fine for home use.
Pros
Compact, inexpensive, shreds well, good for home use, auto off
Cons
No ON button, not for heavy use, shreds four pages, not eight, noisy
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
The Aurora Electronics AS890C Shredder is inexpensive and works well for home use. It's small but performs well for light to medium shredding needs.
My sister has had a home shredder for years and I really never saw the need for one. However, recently I saw someone rifling through our garbage bags that were sitting at the curb and realized that a lot of the mail I tossed out had info that I wouldn't want people to see.
That's when I decided to get a shredder. I didn't want to spend much so I went with the Aurora Electronics AS890C Shredder. I have had good luck with it although, if anything happens to it, I'll probably buy a shredder that can accommodate more sheets at a time and has a larger basket capacity.
About the Aurora Electronics AS890C Shredder
The Aurora AS890C 8 Sheet Crosscut Paper/Credit Card Shredder with Basket is a heavy-duty paper shredder that shreds credit cards, paper clips and staples. This paper shredder has a 8.7-inch throat and features a 125-sheet-capacity basket.

My Experience Using the Shredder
This shredder is described as an "8 sheet cross cut paper shredder with basket featuring overload/overheat protection, auto start, and manual reverse to clear paper jams". It has a 59" power cord and is supposed to shred pieces to 1/5" x 1 17/20" size at a shred speed of 8.36 pages per minute. I find that the pieces are usually that small but the speed is not nearly that fast.
It comes with a basket to fit the shredder top over which I found to be a great convenience. I looked at several shredders that came without baskets and I would have had to find one to fit. This way, I was ready to go out of the box.
The shredder basket and top are black. I don't know if it comes in other colors but black was the only color choice at the office supply store in which I bought the shredder and that is fine. It's just a shredder that I keep in my home office and I don't need a designer color.
Setting up the Aurora Electronics AS890C Shredder is incredibly simple. The top part of the shredder fits on the basket opening tightly yet not so tightly that it's difficult to put on or remove to empty the basket. It gas three buttons on the top - Reverse, Off, and Auto. I have never used the reverse option and I just set it to auto so it will sense that I am pushing something through and go.
The basket is small, about the size of a bathroom wastebasket. I would have liked one a bit bigger but I didn't realize how much I would be shredding when I chose this shredder. I sort of got hooked on shredding everything from old bills, receipts, certain advertisements, sheets of paper, and even old credit cards. I do like that the basket has a small window so that I can see when I am starting to fill it and can then empty the contents before it overflows or jams up the shredder area. If that does happen, though, the shredder will automatically stop working until the jam is cleared. The size of the whole unit is 12" x 7" x 16", with a 8.7" throat width. That fits any document I might have then some. I also read on the box that I could shred CDs with this unit but I have been afraid to try.
There is no "ON" button on the shredder. You feed the item into the horizontal opening and the shredder "senses" the item and turns on and shreds it. If I have a lot to do at one time, this feature can actually be annoying because it takes a few seconds to recognize that I am feeding it so it's slower than I would like. Not crazy slow but I could go much faster is I could just turn the shredder on and feed it everything I have then turn it off.
Although the Aurora Electronics AS890C Shredder is advertised as being able to handle eight sheets of paper at a time, I find that to be untrue. Four sheets go through well, six may or may not jam the shredder so I usually stick with fours sheets or one envelope with contents.
It says it cross cuts and it does but there are many stringy pieces as well. Sometimes there are pieces of documents that have important into on them but one would have to weed through hundreds of shreddings to find that stuff and I only saw it because I shred one document and wanted to see what the shreddings looked like. In general, the shredding is just fine and way better than my previous shredder which was me ripping papers or envelopes in half and tossing them away.
The unit is somewhat noisy. When a staple goes through, it sounds like the whole this will blow up but it doesn't. It handles staples fine and I haven't gotten jammed up when putting stapled documents through this shredder despite the noise.
This shredder plugs into a standard outlet. It doesn't take batteries like some and I like that as I don't want the expense of having to replace batteries. The shredder top gets a little hot when I work it hard but doesn't burn my fingers nor does it seem to overheat. It will turn off it does get too hot but it has yet to do that.
I wouldn't allow small kids near this shredder because it does turn on automatically and little fingers find themselves in many places they shouldn't be. I would keep the shredder up or in a closet unplugged if I had small kids around. In fact, I keep mine unplugged until I use it because I have cats who walk on everything and the thought of one of their little paws or tails getting stuck and tripping the shredder to turn on makes me nervous.
I did buy some oil that was recommended to me to use on the shredder blades and have oiled them every month to keep everything working smoothly and that seems to help with cutting down jams.
In all, the Aurora Electronics AS890C Shredder works fine for me for home use. It is not for business or heavy use. It's good for shredding things that you don't want to just toss out and it does a good job of shredding into strips then cutting those strips in half. It doesn't ALWAYS cut every single strip in half but, in general, it does a fine job for my use. If I were choosing a shredder for work reasons, I would never choose this one because the capacity both of the basket and the amount that can be inserted into the shredder at one time is too small for heavy use. However, at home, for around $40.00, I have already gotten my money's worth and then some a few months after I bought it.
Buying Info
The Aurora Electronics AS890C Shredder is available at office supply stores, some mass-market stores, and online at office supply sites. It is about $40.00 give or take a few bucks.
Conclusion
I am satisfied with my purchase, If something happens to my Aurora Electronics AS890C Shredder, I will definitely buy one with a bigger basket and probably a bigger capacity to shred more at once just because I am now hooked on shredding. But for now, I am shredding away with my Aurora and it's keeping up with me just fine. It could be less noisy but for the price, I give it 4 stars and recommend it for home use.
