AT2020 - A Great First Microphone for Home Studios
Pros
It's nicely priced, and looks good (meaningless detail)!
Cons
It's not a great acoustic instrument microphone.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I believe it's a great condenser microphone, at very reasonable price, that is rugged and well designed, and is good for very specific applications of rapping, podcast, and broadcasting.
A MOMENT OF TRUTH:
If one could have a defining moment, as a creator, mixer, and producer of music; it usually lies within the purchase of a high quality condenser microphone. Audio-Technica presents that defining moment for me. After purchasing a pair of AT4050 condenser microphones, I was stunned by the absolute clarity and nearly perfect capturing of my piano. I knew at that moment that Audio-Technica will forever be on my mind as a top notch company that produces high quality products. It was my moment of truth. However, these microphones may have been too good for rapping, and pod-casting, simply because it would pick up the slight echo in the room, so, I decided to purchase the AT 2020 for about $100 to serve the specific purpose of pod-casting, and rapping.
DESCRIPTION:
With a response frequency from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, and a fixed cardioid polar pattern, the AT2020 gives you versatility in use for rapping, pod-casting, broadcasting, and vocal applications. In addition, for a more unique sound, this microphone will do acoustic instruments modestly well. This design helps provide isolation of the sound source. It's rugged construction assure you years of flawless use. However, I do not recommend dropping it in water, cool-aid, or gasoline. This microphone requires 48v phantom power, so don't buy it unless you have the equipment to run it. It does come standard with a pivoting, threaded stand mount.
MY APPLICATIONS:
My two main applications for this piece of equipment is simply pod-casting for my newly founded radio show called ATHEIST FM, and naturally, vocals and rapping for my music. However, I must admit, that you'll need a pop filter to stop those powerful words that expels air directly into the microphone. Most condenser mics will have this problem. A pop filter is a small price to pay for perfection. You must also realize that having high quality products surrounding this microphone is a must. I use high quality Mogami cables, and Digidesign's M-Box with Pro-Tools LE 7.0 to record.
My little "The Holy Pink Elephant" update was done with this microphone. So, well, if you heard this update then you have heard the AT2020 at work.
CONCLUSION:
If you are just starting a home recording studio, and you are in need of your first introductory condenser microphone, at just 100 bucks, this mic is a steal. If you are looking for a high quality, rugged, and sleek piece of equipment that will last, then purchase this microphone. If you simply read this and have no reason to buy this outstanding microphone, then buy it anyways.
If anything - it looks awesome on my shelf.
WARNING: Unless you simply like the sound it produces, this is not a microphone for professional application of capturing the sounds of acoustic instruments.
