This is a great game for anyone that's looking for a challenge.
Demon Souls is extremely difficult no matter how hardcore you think you are! If you are the casual gamer and are just looking for a relaxed and chill demon slaying fun this game is not for you! This game will leave you frustrated and tempted to throw your controller through that nice new T.v. you bought your self for Christmas. On the upside this game is quite rewarding and leaves you feeling proud and accomplished when you finely reach the end and reclaim your dignity! Making you have this sudden urge to jump for joy, screaming at the T.v. ,"What now, Demon Souls!"
You begin your game by choosing a starting class or job.You can adjust your characters facial traits and hairstyle as well as gender. After you chose your job, and name your character, you are ready to begin your journey into the darkness of Demon Souls. Depending on what class(job) you choose decides your starting equipment and soul level. This is not to important but if you are new to the game .I recommend a Royal to start with. They are very easy to start with because of their ability to use a useful spell and are equipped with a nice ring that restores magic power quicker.
Difficulty
As I said this game is hard! This game is made by a company called Atlus ,in my experience, they make the hardest games to date and love to give you that challenge that brings you back to the earlier glory days of gaming where it takes real skill to beat a game. There is no saving,and no check points in this game.The world of Demon Souls is built around what is called the nexus. having died your soul gets bound to the nexus which acts as this game central hub. Once you defeat the first boss you will gain access to five unique stages or worlds.You will be tasked with hunting and slaying demons of these five worlds to collect their demon souls. These souls are crucial to the development of your character. Basically souls are used for everything. You use them for buying and upgrading weapons; most importantly, they are used to increase your character soul level by increasing one of you character base stats.If you Die so, kiss your hard worked for souls good bye! But Atlus is not completely unforgiving in this. If you can find your blood stain ,with out dieing ,you can reclaim your lost souls.The demons you fight are down right dirty most of the time. It does not take much to kill you! One small mistake and you will be sent back to the the begning and will have to start that stage over.It only gets harder the farther you get.You will spend the majority of the game as a ghost or in spirit form. In this form your health is cut in half. This for obvious reasons quite frustrating and makes the game horribly difficult due to this fact. Every time you slay a boss you will gain your physical body back with full health. There are also special stones that are rare and limited in the game that will bring you back to life. In time, with some effort, you will get better and when you Finally kill that boss that spanked your butt ten times in the row you will be over joyed with pride that will leave you feeling accomplished and satisfied!
Combat
You start off your quest as an eager adventurer looking to make a name for him or herself by hunting demons. Right off the back you notice that this is not your normal hack and slash. What seems a simple fighting system at first will humble you very quickly by the end of the tutorial. Your Character has two bars indicating his/her health and stamina. You can fast attack, strong attack,block,and roll.Be careful ,attacking carelessly will leave your character winded and unable to dodge or block an enemy blow .Making you easy prey for your enemy's if you are not careful. If you have a wand you can cast magic that you can purchase with souls later. Combat differs slightly depending on your chosen poison or playing style. there is a diverse selection of weapons ranging from sabres to bows that effects how your character attacks and moves. General rule of thumb is the bigger the weapon the slower you are gonna swing making timing and precession that much more crucial to your survivability.Over all ,also simple looking, I found the combat style very unique. This and the stunning environments is what hooked me on the game.
Graphics and art style
I found the graphics in this game to be quite amazing, well thought, and done.I love the dark medieval style of this extremely hard dungeon crawler. The designers of this game did a real nice Job with the look and feel of this game that left me feeling timid,jumpy,and on edge the entire time I played this game. Each stage is beautifully well done with there own special look and challenges to conquer.If you pay close enough attention ,you will discover some very beautiful views the game has to offer that make this game that much more inviting.
Multiplayer
Graphics and style aside, Demon Souls was designed to play online. You dont need to be online of course but game play is far more entertaining if you are. The multiplayer adds a twist to the daunting task of slaying demons.As you play Demon souls online you will notice random ghosts of other players who also trying to conquer the world of demon souls.Other players will leave hints and tips that in a attempt to help others with there struggle through the game. While dead or in spirit from you may invade other players games as a black phantom, later on, in hopes of slaying another alive player you yourself can be brought back to life without the use of rare items or the hard task of slaying a boss.Keep in mind when you are alive and breathing the same can happen to you so beware of black phantoms. This aspect of pvp was at times frustrating but added an extra reason to remain cautious and careful no matter how good I got.There is also the option of asking for help. You can play with others as well, which is a nice change of pace to braving the dangers of the dungeons alone. It builds a kind of camaraderie amongst the community of demon souls that makes for a truly unique online gaming experience.
Bottom line, I thought with its beautifully displayed environments and amazing online interaction; they spent a tremendous amount of effort into Demon Souls that made for a unique gaming experience.
