"20,000 Leagues Down to Atlantis"
Disney dives into summer as an inexperienced young explorer follows his grandfather's long-lost journal on a mission to find the legendary island of Atlantis. The existence of a lost island civilization has ignited the imagination since its earliest mention in a dialogue by the Greek philosopher... Read full review »
A Lean-N-Mean cinema hotdog
I've been waiting to see Disney's Atlantis for a while now. I can't even remember what I saw in the trailer any more, other than the fact that it looked visually stunning, and as such was something I wanted to see. I did hear a few say that they were disappointed and so I never actually got around... Read full review »
Details? We Don';t Need No Stinking Details!
I went to see Atlantis: The Lost Empire a few Friday nights ago (I?m still laboring under the curse of my sister?s excessive computer usage) with my cousin Mike and our friend Spring. I never miss a Disney cartoon, so I didn?t want this to be an exception. It wasn?t exactly their best stuff, but it... Read full review »
Disney's Atlantis: All Dried Up
In what was suppose to be a ground-breaking animated film, be it the beautiful animation, and the adult theme, Atlantis: The Lost Empire is too little and too late. There is a better animated film out there right now, Shrek, and there was a better one out there this time last year, Titan A.E..

I Had A Sinking Feeling..
About five minutes into the movie Atlantis: The Lost Empire I had a feeling it would be a disappointment. The people of Atlantis were shown in futuristic space crafts and looked like they?d be more at home on the Jetsons than an ancient civilization. I was right. In fact, it was hard to stay awake... Disney's "Atlantis:" Not the Crapfest I was Expecting...
When it comes to bashing recent Disney films, I'm right there trying to tear down the Eisner-Borgified-Megacongomerate that many of you are. I'm the conductor on the Disney-Bashing Express. So anything that's come out since, say 1989, I've taken with an enormous grain of salt. And after reading... Read full review »
No WONDER It's Lost!!!!
I went expecting GREAT and wonderful things since Atlantis had been billed as Disney's BEST Summer Offering. So, off we went ... myself, my 10 year old son, and my 7 year old daughter.
My son had already read the juvenile paperback book based on this Disney movie. In fact, he's read...

Disney's Atlantis - Not Up to Disney Quality
Being a huge Disney fan, I was looking forward to seeing Atlantis, The Lost Empire. My friend, her 14 year old son, and I went to see the matinee showing of the movie on a Sunday afternoon. I have to say, I'm glad I didn't pay full price to see the movie. For a Disney movie, it didn't live up to my... Read full review »
The Future Under The Sea
I could not wait until Disney's new adventure for the summer came out. Since we only go to a movie once a month as a family outing we needed a movie that was kid and adult friendly. What better movie to see than a Disney movie. My high expectations of this movie were the downfall for me.

Atlantis - The Lost Empire [VHS]
The Disney Studio was built on innovation in animation, so it seems ironic that Atlantis is both a bold departure and highly derivative, borrowing heavily from anime, video games, and graphic novels. Instead of songs and fuzzy little animals, the artists offer an action-adventure set in 1914: nerdy linguist Milo Thatch (Michael J. Fox) believes he's found the location of the legendary Lost Continent. An eccentric zillionaire sends Milo out to test his hypothesis with an anachronistic crew that includes tough Puerto Rican mechanic Audrey (Jacqueline Obradors), demolition expert Vinnie (Don Novello), and butt-kicking blond adventurer Helga (Claudia Christian). When they find Atlantis, its culture is dying because the people can no longer read the runes that explain their mysterious power source--but Milo can. Nasty Commander Rourke (James Garner) attempts to steal that power source, leading to the requisite all-out battle. Atlantis offers some nifty battle scenes, including an attack on a Jules Verne-esque submarine by a giant robotic trilobite and fishlike flying cars. But the film suffers from major story problems. If Princess Kida (Cree Summer) remembers her civilization at its height, why can't she read the runes? Why doesn't Milo's crew notice that the Atlanteans live for centuries? The angular designs are based on the work of comic book artist Mike Mignola (Hellboy), and the artists struggle with the characters' stubby hands, skinny limbs, and pointed jaws. The result is a film that will appeal more to 10-year-old boys than to family audiences. Suitable for ages 8 and up: violence, scary imagery, tobacco use, and a difficult-to-follo w story. --Charles Solomon
