Good Subwoofer
Pros
Lots of input options, smooth low sound. Not boomy/clacky/farty. Surprizingly nice build quality.
Cons
Touchy level/volume control. Not a major problem though. Can't really think of anything so far.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
For the money, I could not find anything to match the sound quality. Actual useful bass and not a boomy/farty/clacky mess.
I built my own front channel speakers for my surround setup but needed something to add those extra low frequencies (lower than 40hz) . Like the last reviewer, I am picky about bass. I went to Circuit City and Best Buy and tried out all the "big names" (Sony, JBL, Infinty, etc). It seemed every one I tried would either not go low enough, or sounded too boomy, and most of them farted out... sounded like the speaker was going to come out of the box with a clacky sound. I have never heard of Athena before and at the last Best Buy I stopped at had one in their little demo center. I was trying all of the active subwoofers out and was not happy with any of them and saw this one was on sale and thought what the hell, couldn't be worse than anything else I've heard. Holy crap was I surprized. The bass was LOW, and SMOOTH. Not clacky/boomy/farty. At first I didn't believe it was this sub, and that the bass I was hearing was coming from the kids messing around in the car audio department. I was considering just building my own sub but after hearing this and being that it was under $300 I went for it. It compliments my homebrew speakers very well. I will say that the level volume is very touchy. The difference between 7 and 7.5 is huge, so it takes a little fiddling to get the proper volume.
