The Bottom Line:
This is one of the most fun games I've played, and it's even more fun with another player! It's fun, entertaining, engaging, and replayable.
These recent Lego games are really awesome cooperative games. They're really easy to get the hang of, there aren't many controls, and anyone can pick them up and play them. Despite the fact that they're simple in gameplay, they're truly addictive and fun for gamers of any skill level.
The game designers have really found unique ways of keep the game interesting, as you play throughout the levels. First, the game has a classic Batman look, right from the opening sequence. It really does a great job of Lego-ifying Gotham city, while keeping its grimy and dark look. What's more, they have the original Batman theme, that we all have come to know and love, playing in the background of certain parts of the game.
You start out in the Batcave, with Robin following you around. If you've played previous Lego games, you'll know that the computer character (who can be substituted by a real player at any time) is required to complete the levels, as they're designed for cooperative actions between the two players. Each series of levels are accompanied by a boss. To navigate, you can simply walk through the Batcave and hop into one of Batman's vehicles sitting in the cave. This will take you to a level selection screen where you can start playing levels to a specific story.
To keep it interesting, a lot of the levels have something fun to do. One level might have a bunch of little cars sitting around, that you are able to hop into and drive around the level. Others may have animals you can ride. They did a great job of balancing things out so you don't get bored. They also have some funny animated sequences at the beginning of each level, and at the end.
The cooperative system couldn't have been better. Player 2 can join in by simply pressing start at any time at all. Dropping out is as easy as pressing start, and choosing “Drop Out”. This means that the first player can start the game with or without a second player, and the second player can join and leave as they please, throughout the course of the gameplay. My only real gripe about the cooperative play is that you can accidentally punch the other player. They still haven't figured that it's a terrible idea for a game like this! There might be an option to disable it, but...I honestly haven't looked!
Overall, this game is a ton of fun and highly recommended to lovers of cooperative games.
