Good game for 'non-hardcore' RPG fans

Pros Nice graphics, fun to play, great social environment
Cons Too little pack space, not enough quests for mid level characters, no NPCs, expensive crafting
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Bottom Line? Great graphics, fun game play, easy to learn/move around world. Spend the money, you'll have fun in the least.
Having played Asheron's Call and Dark Age of Camelot, I thought I'd give AC2 a shot having been way from RPGs for some time (spent the last year or so playing FPS.)

Over all, AC2 is a great game - beautiful graphics, easy to use HUD and lots of stuff for single AND group players to do.

What I didn't like about AC1 is there wasn't much for sigle players to do other than fight monsters. What I like about AC2 is the addition of quests. Each quest has a level requirement and is easily completed if you just want to log on, play by yourself and have some fun. I'm a level 29 Human Archer and have played about 80% of the time by myself, questing and fighting monsters.

One of the huge drawbacks of AC2, in my opinion, is the lack of NPC stores. (NPC= Non Player Characters) Since there are no stores in AC2, you must hunt (or buy from other players) the weapons and armor you need to survive in the game. This can be a bit tricky at lower levels. In order to loot monsters and receive items that are equivalent to your level, you need to fight mobs higher than your own level. This can cause a lot of deaths if you don't know what you're doing.

Crafting is a neat addition to AC2, but it's hard to find some of the items required for crafting high level weapons/armor. For example, Reedshark Spikes (required for higher tier crafted items) are dropped by lvl 5 monsters - however, in order to use them in crafting, you need to be a pretty high lvl character in relation to the monster you'll be fighting. So you have a lvl 20 character fighting a lvl 5 Reedshark in the hope he'll drop a spike. Since the drop is random, you'll have to fight upward of 50 Reedsharks in order to find a single spike. This means you'll spend hours upon hours fighting lvl 5 monsters for the 'chance' that they'll drop the crafting item you're after.

But let's say you have good luck and find a few spikes here and there (the current going rate for a spike - in trade with other player - is 1,000 gold: so that gives you an idea as to how hard they are to come by) once you have the spike and go to craft, you have the chance to fail. When you fail, you lose all the recipe items you used to 'try' crafting the item you wanted.

As a lvl 29 character, I gave up on crafting at around lvl 9 and decided I'd just buy or hunt for the items I needed.

The social environment is great in this game, you can pretty much find a group to hunt with within a few minutes of entering the game and since crafting is a 'required taste' and the lack of stores, the social environment takes another step forward when it comes to trading.

Sure, there are some people who love to craft, doesn't mean you have to. Just find a forge and you can pretty much find the weapon or armor that you need - for a price. Since the items required for crafting are so hard to find, you'll sometimes find yourself paying a premium for an item.

Overall - after all the negative stuff I just wrote, you will find AC2 an enjoyable game.

P.S. Was part of the Beta Test for this game and STILL decided to buy/play it - so it can't be that bad of a game. :^)
