Sungrown = Winner...A fantastic little smoke
Pros
Great little cigar, packed with flavor and not overpriced ilke most Fuentes
Cons
Too short (thus the double chateau) - can be inconsistent
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
One of the fee Fuentes that HASN'T been hyped into outer-space...Still in low orbit, at 3.90 a stick this is a must have!
I can remember back to when smoking an Arturo Fuente cigar was virtually a faux pas...This was a sad time when Macanudos were actually in style, and just as lacking in flavor as they are today...Ahhh...thankfully how things have changed!
Nowadays the game is just a little bit different - Even the novice smokers ask for an A. Bomb based on reputation (I enjoy watching image chasers nearly choke when taking the first puff of of their first VSG thank you!) and in light of the shift to powerful cigars, Fuente has risen to unheard of ranks in the cigar world - the truth is, A. Fuente ALWAYS pruduced killer stoges, however we weren't always apreciative of it! Just like the eternal popularity battle between white and red, the war between mild and flavorful smokes will always exist, just like in the wine world...
The Chateau Fuente is a handsome little devil, a stout 4 1/2 inches by 50 ring - it is basically a standard robusto less a half inch - pity too, because in its sungrown tranche, the Chatueay really is a stunning cigar and you'll wish it were "A" size in length! Although this beauty will only go for 35 minutes or so, it's a damned good 35 minutes, so just enjoy it and try not to mind your fingertips too much -- just like the majority of the Hemingway line, the Fuente Chateau is quite a killer, only thanks to lack of marketing and review hype, this one remains reaonsbly priced AND yet continues to be extroadinarily flavorful and robust! While the standard Chateau is a great cigar, the Sun Grown Chateau Fuente is a DAMNED GREAT cigar!
The Chateau Fuente is named after the tobacco farm ranch at which all Fuente Opus X cigars are now made...Long before Opus X was even a figment of a Fuente imagination, the Chataeu was a staple of the line, and bridged the gap between Robusto and Overwight Panatella - when the Chateau was introduced, not many short-50's existed (that is, a 50/64 ring gauge cigar under 5 inches) the Chateau broke the rules and set a precedent for most of the Fuente line, which at the time, was too strong for "the rules" and therefore was almost Fuax Pas... Thankfully tase buds all over have woken up and smelled the coffee (no pun) however ironically, this is also tragic, because with the added demand, Fuente prices has been driven up on the grey market to remarkable highs (10 bucks for a short story anyone?!?!?!?!) Despite the added hype and attention, the Sun Grown Chateau is a hidden gem of the line and I'm happy to report it remains fairly priced, in the midst of Hemingway and Don Carlos line price-madness! (hopefully my review won't put an end to this!)
The Chateau smokes wonderfully, constructed with the same painstaking care as the entire Fuente line, the Chateau burns evenly and smooth - The wrapper is slightly oily and darker than the regular line Fuente, since it is Sun Grown. The cigar comes in its own cedar liner tube (like the standard chateau) only instead of a green ribbon and green bottom-border on the band, the ribbon and bottom border of the cigar band is BLACK - this is how you distinguish the blend in case you don't tell by the color of the wrapper tobacco! (I don't know how this could be possible BTW).
Flavor wise, this one is packed with body and balance- Leathery notes combined with a domineering coffee and spice - the cigar is a total powerhouse, yet is never on the brink of being overpowering - the undertones and smooth cedar keep this right in line, and the finish is long and warm, with peppermint and malt notes which hang on your tongue for quite some time... The only issue with the Chateau is the occasional dud - sadly, there is some inconsistency here, but it truly is rare, and the quality control rivals a majority of the competition, so don't let this deter you! Added to which, the Chateau Fuente is one of the few Fuentes which is readily avaiable, though I highly recomend you look out for the Sun Grown version, since it has alot more flavor and body!
At 3.90 a stick (by the box, 4.95 single) this is a stunning little cigar and one of the few Fuente items that hasn't yet gotten to untouchable level, BUT continues to be a hidden gem! Go ahead, let those other idiots pay 10 bucks for a Heminway Short Story (actually, it's probably worth the ten) but while people fight in the aisles for the last Hemmi, you can casually walk forth and grab 5 Chateaus and never be noticed - AND you get to pay half! This is a hands down winner - Bravo Fuente, excellent cigar!
