Not bad, but could have been a lot better

Pros Arena mode and missions are very fun, customization is great!
Cons Controls haven't been updated to PS2 standards
Recommended it? Yes
Being a fan of mechs in the past, I've played a fair share of these kinds of games. Since I was one of the lucky ones that actually got the Playstation 2 on October 26th, I was trying to find any launch titles that were interesting. Armored Core 2 is a very fast-paced, action oriented take on the genre that could have been an excellent game, if not for a few shortcomings.

Gameplay-
Probably the biggest letdown of this game is the control scheme. Many AC fans will feel right at home with these controls, as they are almost identical to the Playstation AC games. The problem with this is that despite the fact that this is a Playstation 2 game; it does not take advantage of the analog controls. Turning your AC in this game can be very tedious, as enemies tend to fly behind you very often. Mastering the use of the booster is a must if you want to stand a chance in the arena. Also, the L2/R2 buttons are used to look up and down. This can sometimes be confusing in the middle of battle as you must remind yourself left is up, right is down.

Graphics-
Not bad. This is a launch title for the PS2, and the graphics do not disappoint. The game usually runs at a very smooth frame rate, but when there is a large amount of missiles on screen, the game will slow down considerably. Many missions will place you against many enemies at once, which sometimes slow down the action on screen. This slowdown is somewhat annoying, but it does not make the game totally unplayable. The "jaggies" problem that plagued many other PS2 games does not really apply to this game, as you hardly notice them.

Sound/Music-
The sound effects are pretty standard fare. The machine guns don't really sound like machine guns, but the sounds that are used will do. Some of the explosion sounds and energy weapons are more convincing. The music ranges from high quality to very bothersome.

Multiplayer-
Don't even try it. With both players launching volleys of missiles at each other, the game slows down to the point that it isn't even fun to play. I haven't tested this over a link cable (using 2 Playstation 2's), this may alleviate some of the slowdown seen while using split screen.

Overall-
In spite of its flaws, Armored Core 2 is still a very fun game. Completing the arena is challenging, but rewarding. The ability to customize your AC with hundreds of parts makes for a longer lasting game. Some of the missions are very fun to complete, though some may take some time. My advice to any Armored Core 2 players is to get some AC parts that you feel comfortable with and do some damage.
