Going against the grain

Pros If you liked Robotech/Macross....
Cons If you like to control your robot....
Recommended it? No
As most people who have reviewed Armored Core 2 have enjoyed it, I will take the responsibility of giving an alternate viewpoint.

As a fan of the AC series, I always thought that with the advent of the PS2, they would finally upgrade this game to use the analog joysticks. No. We're not too sure why they didn't even consider it as an option, but they didn't. This of course makes control difficult, especially as there's new moves you can do in the game. 90% of all players will suit themselves up with a tank mech because they can't get a decent config so they'll sit in one place firing enough ammo to obliterate Mars. This takes a lot of the fun out of the game, especially in missions requiring you to be able to move like the computer does - fast and precise. I didn't have any complaints with the AI for the most part, and the amount of parts you can get in the game will keep you occupied for many days with different combinations of mechs.

The graphics, sound, and music are okay. The graphics had to be toned down from games like Tekken Tag, or DOA because there is, at any time, at least 5 missiles going after something in the gameplay. I found considerable slowdown in a lot of missions, especially when other mechs or myself had multi-warhead missiles. Surprisingly, I didn't mind too much. The booms and bangs of the game are mediocre, though the voices add a nice touch (a tad unrealistic for some of the corporate messengers). The music didn't do it for me one bit, and I kept it turned off most of the time.

Multiplayer just isn't happening, unless you have a pre-saved mech with lots of parts to choose from. Otherwise you fight with the stock mech with the crappy pulse gun. If you thought slowdown with missiles was bad in single player, you ain't seen nothing yet (Theoretically, you could probably get around 70+ missiles flying on the screen).

So to summerize, if you really liked the past AC games, and found a config to your liking, and would have no trouble incorperating the R3/L3 buttons into your config, then it would make a good buy. I'd rent it first though and see how you like it.
