The Archos Jukebox 6000: Finally someone upped the bar in portable mp3 memory

Pros memory capacity, durability, design, ease of use, acts as an external hard drive
Cons headphones are mediocre, battery life is ok, sometimes the volume isn't high enough
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you're serious about taking your mp3 collection with you, the Archos Jukebox 6000 will satisfy your needs more than satisfactorily...
I recently bought the Archos Jukebox 6000 after shopping around for some time. The newsflash is "Countrymen, we finally have a portable mp3 player that has the minimum memory capacity for the new millenium."

Memory had always been my biggest gripe about the other portable mp3 players out there. Many say their player can hold 60 minutes of music, but the fineprint admits that this is possible if the mp3s are ripped at lower recording settings, like 96 kps. 160 kps is the sound quality minimum for me, so that would mean I'd only have about 20 minutes of music with their player.

My woes have temporarily subsided with the Archos Jukebox 6000. With 6 gigs of memory it holds a chitload of songs, the majority of my mp3 collection. Currently I have 1040 songs stored. In terms of memory used, along with the MusicMatch software loaded, I'm using all of 240mb of the more or less total 6000mb available.

Usability is a major plus with the Jukebox. Via a USB cable, I connect the player to my computer and it acts as a separate hardrive, in my case it's my G drive. I just drag and drop from my music folder to my G drive and the song files are transferred. This also means that I can store other file types onto the Jukebox as it acts just like an external hard drive. If I have some large files I want to transfer between two non-network computers, I can do so with the Jukebox.

Utilizing the same hard drives used in laptops, you might be wondering just how big this mp3 player is. It is not the smallest portable mp3 player on the market. Relatively speaking, it's about the same dimensions as a cassette tape walkman, maybe even a little bit thinner. Depending on the type of pants I'm wearing, it can fit in my pocket just fine. It's weight isn't noticeable either.

Functionability is pretty good. The Jukebox utilizes the big cirular button with the "north", "south", "east", and "west" areas being different button commands like "Play/Pause" or "Stop", similar to many portable CD players on the market now. The only idiosyncracy with this is that there isn't a direct volume control. One has to press the "menu" button and select "Volume" from a list of choices. That seems a little silly to me.

How motion sensitive is the Jukebox? It sometimes has a problem with extended pausing when I'm walking or running with it. If I hold it in my hand, where there will be less movement, it performs perfectly. If I'm walking down a sidewalk at a somewhat steep incline, well, there may be a pregnant pause or two.

Price-wise, I shopped around online and found it for just under $300, excluding shipping. Right now, Archos offers a $75 mail-in rebate that I would reccomend confirming when making your purchasing decision.

The headphones are barely o.k., sounding better than I at first thought. However their durability is poor due to their very design. I somehow broke one of the ear pieces and replaced them with my CD walkman headphones.

I'm confident that my Jukebox 6000 will satisfy me for some time. With ease of use and its memory capacity I don't see myself outgrowing it anytime soon. If you think you'll need more memory than 6 gigs, wait for Archos to introduce their 20 gig Jukebox, it's coming soon...
