A Great Deal

Pros 6 gigs of music. Portable. Great for car trips.
Cons Tough for non-techies to get used to. Short battery life. Not much bass.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you're looking for a portable MP3 player/hard drive capable of holding up to 1500 songs with good sound quality, this player is for you.
The price for this 6 gig MP3 player/hard drive is quickly dropping across the world. Originally costing close to $400, it now can be purchased for as little as $200 in some places. Based on the average size of an MP3 song, you could fit 1500 songs on the Archos Jukebox 6000. Most of us don't have enough CD's to fully load this great MP3 player to its maximum capacity. Even with the trends of downloading MP3's off the internet, this player should allow for enough room and more for all your songs. Considering the number of songs that can fit on the Jukebox 6000, you are getting an incredible deal: you are paying about 16 CENTS per song - much better than the 64 meg players that may cost you up to 10 DOLLARS per song. This is clearly the best thing about the Jukebox 6000.

When I first purchased the player, I did encounter some problems. First of all, the batteries inside the Jukebox were dead. You are required to charge them for several hours before you can even begin to use it. But my batteries weren't charging. After calling Archos technical support (and getting connected to a Tech representative within 2-3 minutes, apparently unusually quick compared to others' experiences with Archos Tech support), I was informed that the batteries were probably faulty, which was why another set of batteries were already shipped with my Jukebox. So I simply had to replace the batteries, which can be a hassle. You need a screwdriver to open the battery case, which can be a bit tedious. You have to force open the battery case, which was scary for me knowing the pressure of the screwdriver was also near the display of the Jukebox. Anyway, after I replaced the batteries and charged them overnight, the Jukebox was ready to go.

Connecting it to the computer via the USB port was a breeze. It took some time to organize some folders within the Jukebox. It also takes about 5 seconds to transfer each MP3, so it can take a half-hour to an hour to transfer all your MP3's, depending on how many you have. By the way, this player also acts as a 6 gig external hard drive. It is possible to use the hard drive as a backup/storage for other files, but be sure to put those files in a separate directory, perhaps labeled 'DATA.'

The sound quality in the player is fairly good. While I definitely would NOT say the quality is perfect and professional, most people would probably not notice much of a difference in the quality compared to your typical stereo system. The bass is less obvious than desired, and there is a slight tinny sound to the music. But overall, it's something I am able to deal with.

If you have a cassette adapter and perhaps a cigarette lighter adapter (or you can now purchase the car kit off the Archos web site for $39), you can take advantage of this player in your car for those long trips. It is MUCH easier to switch songs on the player than it would be to change CDs while you drive. A friend of mine while traveling with me mentioned that it was like a big CD changer. It is much like that: a 150 CD changer. It sounds great in the car. This is a major reason why I like the Archos Jukebox 6000 so much. The downside, however, is without a cigarette lighter adapter, the player in my car runs out of power in about 4 to 5 hours, not quite as long as the 8 hours described in the booklet provided with the player. If you drive much more than 4 hours, I would recommend purchasing the car kit or buying a Radioshack adapter.

The headphones provided with the Jukebox are pretty bad with absolutely no bass to enjoy. Scrap those headphones and invest in some higher quality ones. Oh, and do not plan on jogging with this MP3 player. Though Archos leads you to believe that it is perfect for jogging, it will likely begin skipping if you go jogging.

For home use and in the car, this player is a great deal. 16 cents a song can't be beat, at least not right now. Compared to most MP3 players, this is one of the best offered at the time. For excellent portability and good sound quality combined with the possibility of 1500 songs in the palm of your hand, it doesn't get any better than this.
