Don't Believe The Hype

Pros New meters, legends, new matches, detail
Cons Season mode, gender biased, V.O.s, lack of titles, etc.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Fun to rent, not to buy. This game probably will get old fast, save your money for something else, really.
Smackdown Vs. Raw had me very, very hopeful. The commercials showed stunning graphics, amazing matches, and incredible attention to detail. That's about all it has going for it.

The graphics are simply incredible. The superstars look like they do every Monday or Thursday night, from the facial expressions, to the way they move, to their clothes. The matches are widespread, from a good ol' one-on-one, to elimination chamber matches, to bra and panties.

Before I get to bashing the game, the other bit of praise I have is the new meters they have for in-game control. You now can have chop battles, submission meters, and a whole new meter for royal rumble, which makes it a lot more difficult to force your opponent out of the ring (believe me, that's a good thing. You get frustrated after being shoved out by Hurricane on all the past games..)

Another nice touch for any old-school wrestling fans, are the legends. You can play as Rowdy Roddy Piper (Oddly enough, he is available to you at the start of the game, you don't have to buy him), Legion of Doom, Andre the Giant, Bret Heart, Masked Kane, Original Undertaker, Mankind, The Rock, etc..

Now, for the bad stuff.

The voice overs are a nice touch, but so many of them don't fit at all. Kurt Angle's V.O. in particular has an echo to it, and it sounds like he's still in-studio talking. For the most part, the other voice overs aren't as bad, all of the characters in season mode talk, except for the one you're portraying.

The title selection is disappointing, RVS has left out the Women's Title, the Tag Team Title, Cruiserweight Title, AND the Hardcore title. Although you can make your own belt and have it incorporated into the game, it costs quite a lot of money to make a quality belt, so people who don't play the season mode a lot and gain money from it might get discouraged quickly.

The diva selection is horrible, as per usual. This is a very male-focused game, the menus feature either Trish Stratus or Stacey Keibler dancing around, you have the ability to have divas spank each other, and eventually 'kiss and make up' in a diva vs. diva match, and once again, you cannot play as a diva in season mode.

Season mode is a disappointment altogether. You can only play one year, and then it's up. If you want to start a new season, it's exactly the same as the last one. You win the affection of a diva after a fight with her then-manager, get a title shot, if you loose it, then you win the affection of another diva, get a title shot, etc. Each diva's affection is won with rather bold cut scenes involving the scantly clad girls swooning over you. The one's I've seen include massages, showering together, and undressing for the player.

CAUTION: Strenuous bashing of buttons to achieve submission and/or royal rumble victory may be hazardous to one's health.
