Keep your tank healthy and clear
Pros
Set up and maintain your biological filter, cheaper than cycle, keeps tank clear
Cons
none
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Get your biological filter up, keep your new tank from getting cloudy
Stress Zyme has a few competitors, one, the largest being Cycle. Cycle essentially does the same thing as Stress Zyme but quicker and more efficiently, though it costs around 1-2 dollars more. I have written a review on Cycle and I suggest you read it. So now that that?s out of the way lets get onto the product itself
The product comes in three sizes that I have seen, the smallest being 4 fl oz (120ml), for this size Stress Zyme will set you back $4.99 and Cycle will cost you $5.99. This size will treat 240 gallons, fresh or marine.
The most valuable filter in any aquarium or pond is your biological filter. Your biological filter is made up of trillions of live bacterium that eat and thrive on ammonia and nitrite and other things (not to be confused with nitrAte, which is not lethal to your fish, nitrIte is). Your biological filter usually lives in your gravel, and most all filters contain media for your biological filter so it will also live in there. I use this chemical at home and the fish store where I work.
When starting a new aquarium it is essential to get your biological filter set up before you put in any fish. You can do this in other ways than with a chemical. Most fish stores will sell you a cup of gravel in their tank. This gravel contains billions of good bacteria that will comprise your biological filter. Now we will really go on to the chemical itself.
One teaspoon of Stress Zyme is needed to treat every 10 gallons of your tank, but this is just for the upkeep. When starting out a tank you want to add 2 teaspoons of Stress Zyme on the first day, seventh day, and then on the fourteenth day. By the time you?ve made it to the fourteenth day you can rest assured you have already established your tank. The annual upkeep of one teaspoon, is not really necessary though most people like to do it because it makes them feel as though they are treating their tank better
The bottle says it will keep your tank clearer and it?s not a lie. Very often when someone sets up a new tank it becomes cloudy. Sometimes there is a reason for this (mainly because the carbon in the filter was not rinsed out or the gravel wasn?t rinsed out, even when your gravel is rinsed out it will probably still cloud your water though not for long). I have noticed in my tanks that I have set up they don?t get cloudy when they?re new anymore, this is a first also. I?ve been keeping tanks for nine years and this is the only chemical which has been able to keep a new tank from getting cloudy. Don?t mistake this for a chemical specifically for clearing up your tank; it hasn?t helped clear up cloudiness on my tanks that are already well established.
So try it out, you?ll be fine with it. Though if your local pet store doesn?t carry this I?d recommend you substitute it with Cycle.
