API Stress Zyme

Pros Easy to use; one bottle goes a long way; water stays nice and clear
Cons strong smell that bothers my nose if I sniff it directly
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  You need a good balance of beneficial bacteria in any fish tank, and API Stress Zyme delivers just that.
When we moved this past spring, we needed to buy a new fish tank for our 19 year old African Rope Fish, Ropey.  He's about a foot long, and really enjoys swimming around, so we splurged and bought a 56 gallon tank.  We also had to stock up on the accessories needed to start a new tank system, and since my hubby was in charge of such items, he chose API Stress Zyme as one of our tank additives.

Product Information
API (Aquarium Pharmaceuticals) Stress Zyme is a liquid additive you put into your fish tank to speed the development of the good bacteria.  It contains live bacteria.  This additive is used to help eliminate the ammonia and nitrites from fish eliminations, and keeps the water clearer.  This additive does not remove chlorine from the water, that's a different product.

API Stress Zyme comes in a couple sizes, but we went with the 8 ounce bottle.  The cap of the bottle doubles as a measuring device with 1mL, 5mL, and 10mL lines.  The instructions on the back of the label tell you how much of the product to add depending on the amount of water.  The aquarium set-up amounts are different than maintenance amounts, so it's important to thoroughly read the instructions on the bottle before adding any.

When we use it, we add it to one spot and allow the filter's currents to dispurse it.  Sometimes during our partial water changes, hubby adds it as the clean water flows in, which mixes it in quickly.

Appearance and Odor
The liquid is clear.  You do need to give it a good shake before using (and you do not need to refrigerate it after opening).  This stuff has an odd odor that makes my nose tickle.  It almost smells like something you'd find at a hair salon.  It has a chemical-style perfume scent, and to sniff the bottle, it's pretty strong.

Efficacy
We've had our tank set-up, using API Stress Zyme for over half a year and the water stays nice and clean.  We have live plants, gravel, feeder fish, and our Ropey all living together in nice, clear water.  I cannot tell you how much bacteria is in the water, but it never gives off any strong odors like ammonia, so I can only guess the product works.

When we do partial water changes, we always add in some API Stress Zyme.  However, that's the only time we add it.  This stuff has a long shelf life, not expiring until 2016 (purchased in 2011).

Final Verdict
My hubby has had fish tanks almost his whole life, so he's the one who picked this stuff out.  We both agree that our clear water and happy fish are likely in part caused by the good API Stress Zyme we purchased.  One 8 ounce bottle has lasted us this long, and there's still about 1/3 left, so that's not bad.  I don't have any recollection of the cost, but we did purchase it at Petsmart.
