The Bottom Line:
Worth the price and a great way to have all your medias in one device.
I bought the 8 GB Ipod Touch a couple years ago, thinking it was just a cool thing to have and I would only use it for music. Boy, was I wrong. I have to say the Ipod Touch has replaced my Laptop, Radio, and CD Player in one.
Let me just go over some of the really cool features on this. This handheld unit comes with the standard templates for Email, YouTube, Maps, Safari, Calendar, Clock, Calculator, Weather, Stocks, Contacts, Voice Memos (which cannot be used since their is no microphone on the unit which stinks) and Notes. All of these apps are pretty basic. It is easy once you first get the unit to setup the email function so it goes, via your WiFi connection, and grabs your email for you. No need to fire up the slow Vista laptop. The Maps icon uses location based on your WiFi location, so mapping out directions is fairly easy to do (and use satellite pictures as well as check out local traffic). Weather just shows 5 day forecasts for the area, Stocks for your tickers that updates every few minutes and a basic calculator or scientific if you put it horizontally. The Safari is fast and in most cases, can see all the webpages correctly. NOW...if the webpage is Flash, you are outta luck. No Flash for this device, meaning you can't see the cool websites, so I guess there is a need for the laptop still. In some cases, websites will automatically redirect you to the Mobile or Iphone site for better browsing.
The device itself is about the size of deck of cards or so ( 2.4 x 0.3 x 4.3 inches) and the screen is highly responsive to touch and very easy to use. It weighs a meager 8 ounces so it does not feel like much in your pocket. The construction is very solid. The battery does not come out to be replaced by an average person (of course you can pry it open and go at it, but that's your call...you void the warranty if you do it). The shiny metal bottom with the Apple logo also holds onto many fingerprints as well as the screen, so the cloth it comes with is very handy. you hit the main button at the bottom to always get back to the main page, or hit it twice, and you can search your entire Ipod for music, pictures, video, games, etc. which is part of the new software update.
There are neat options on it. Now, instead of linking the Ipod Touch to the PC for ITunes, you can do it by tapping the Itunes logo at the bottom to get PodCasts, videos, music, etc. If you want to get games and such (which are always fun), then click the App Store icon to get your game on. It's straightforward and easy to navigate. You will have to sign up the account on a regular PC I believe to get ITunes to your unit.
I use Amazon to get my MP3's and it's very easy to transfer them from a PC (there's no app for that) to the IPod touch since it's an MP3 format. Same with pictures to transfer from a PC...using IPhoto or the PC programs. The music play is really cool and in order to shuffle, you can just shake the unit to skip to the next track (watch out when doing this when jogging). The headphones are okay...not great, so if you want a better sound, Bose may be an option if you are a big spender. The volume control on the side is easy to use and
The battery life seems to last a while for me still. I charge it everynight and after about 5 hours of music and an hour of game play, it's about ready to be charged. The lack of phone calls on it may lead to an extended battery life I think, but I have no complaints at this point since it has lasted a while. Another cool option is if you unplug the headphones or from a car adapter, it stops playing, and then you plug the cord back in and can re-play. Another nice touch is in music or podcasts, you can tap a button to rewind 30 seconds, which I use all the time. Really a nice touch.
I have purchased a rubber protector for it, which has saved me many a times. This helps it when I drop it frequently, but also have to say it shows the good quality of construction. There are a few crashes here and there, but usually, pressing the power button on the top and turning off and resetting fixes most issues I have had with it.
I use this for Email, Web browsing, Banking, weather, Sports, Games, Movie times, Wifi-searching, Traffic, Map Directions, and more. I think if you are lazy like me and don'ty like using a big and bulky laptop on the sofa, this is the unit for you. An all-in-one device for many more items than music.
Also, the Pandora app is great to stream commercial free (for the most part) music based on the genre you want. Get a good docking station for it (make sure it fits 3rd generation Ipod Touch) and there's your entertainment center (as well as YouTube viewer after a few drinks when most things are pretty funny).
Great unit and I wonder how I lived without it.
