Pros
Unbelievable features in such a small compact unit.<br>Easy to use.
Cons
went out of sync. Thankfully, it was repaired via iTunes right away.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
The Apple ipod nano 8gb fifth-generation is a pretty cool toy with plenty of music capacity and has some cool features like Movies, FM Radio, Video ability, voice recording, games.
I was fortunate to win not one but two iPods through writing and it was easy!
I'm actually hoping to win another one very soon. Getting an iPod for free is very cool and you can try too. Just check the rules in the Member Center. Just click it on the bottom of the Epinions.com page.
Epinions.com. is having a Sweepstakes with eight ipods to be won in Oct.
A few years ago the prize was a 60gb iPod with more than a ton of space. I have a zillion songs on it along with about fifteen movies. More recently I was sent the chromatic blue colored Apple iPod nano 8gb. Funny thing, as the last few years went by people found more use for lower priced and smaller capacity iPod players. This fifth generation iPod nano and others like it are a rage at the moment.
I have had and use my 60gb iPod just about every day. It's been a gem except for some recent black bars that run across the screen. Because I have been satisfied with my original I immediately told my wife I was giving the new one to her. BIG MISTAKE!! I had no idea what this newer generation of iPods could do until after we got it and started playing with it. It took no time for the initial set up. We did set up a separate account for my wife. The small print booklet gave us all the general information we needed.
Improvements
The first thing I noticed and liked was that the ear plugs tap into the bottom of the iPod rather than the top as my original did. I believe that was a second generation iPod. I never liked that the wires wold come out of the top of the unit.
This of course is a much lower capacity iPod but the screen is of an excellent size with a 2" horizontal width. This screen also seems brighter than my original. Like mine, movies can be added and watched, something I do most every night going to sleep. That process is easy to do and I have an iTunes account that is a must if owning an iPod. That's where you can purchase music, movies and TV shows. It's also the place to sync the iPod for some of its features...and as I later found out to resync the iPod when all turned black. More later.
Listen to this, very cool. If I am listening to a song and would like to bypass it, I simple shake the ipod. Yup, it has a shake feature that makes changing shuffle songs an easier process. Don't like the music playin', give a shake and the next winner will be on the air.
I WANT THOSE FUN FEATURES
After receiving the new iPod I started setting it up for my wife. When I turn it on and go through the screen the iPod notes her name on it.
As I worked the iPod I started reading some of the built in features. This has video capability built right in with sound. I tried it out. The quality is pretty darn good. Much better than what I get through my Canon digital still image camera. The film stores and/or erases easily. I had fun with it.
I also was amazed to find ot it has a built in FM radio. The receiver is excellent giving incredibly clear sound. I really like that because I'm one who enjoys radio more than sets of albums I put into the iPod. Setting it to stations was easy and the numbers big and bright. The call letters of the stations are easily read as they come into view.
Ha, when I found the "Fitness" feature I laughed. What could that be? I found out. I could set my weight into it and the iPod has a pedometer built right in! I started walking around my house seeing how many calories I was burning. Incredible, the toys this iPod comes with but I think it lied to me saying I only burned 1 calorie after six trips around from my living room and dining room. My trip to the kitchen refrigerator added a quick 120 calories. There's something not equitable there, but I digress.
This Apple iPod 8gb nano has three games bulit in. One (Klondike) is a solitaire that I have yet to win after about a dozen tries. I like the second game (Maze) where a virtual ball is rolled by tilting the iPod as it it in a flat horizontal position. It's amazing how the iPod senses my movement and direction. The third game (Vortex) is a sort of beefed up future "pong" in the round that I played when video games were first introduced to the market. It's nothing I'll play too often. I did like listening the background music as I was playing the games.
What I did like was a feature that could record my voice. I like that for giving myself messages. It's something I would use when at a destination and perhaps I want to remind myself of something I wold like to write about on Epinions.com. It's a snap to use and the sound quality is pretty good. I could erase no-longer-needed recordings easily too. Today I used to to remind myself of something I wanted to add to this review as it was in progress.
I did try the alarm feature but my dead ears couldn't hear it so though it may be good for others, it is useless to me.
The Apple iPod 8gb also has what they call the Genius feature that will put together like songs. This wasn't something I particularly liked so I don't use it. I do however love the shake and shuffle feature that sends the ipod to the next song.
More Basic iPod nano Info
This is also so much tinier than my older Apple 60gb iPod and so slim at less than a 1/4" thick. I like the horizontal shaped screen of the new iPod over the more square shape of the old one. I like that I can use my same plug-in charger for both players. This can also be charged via my desktop but we set it all up on my laptop while I am having work done on the PC.
The ipod without a case is much too slippery to hold securely in my hands. The curved profile is slick looking and makes the unit slick to touch. Also, fingerprints are a major nuisance on the screen and back.
Dialing and finding the many features on the iPod is easy for me because I own one for a number of years. Though this is smaller in physical size and capacity as my original, it still works basically the same.
The battery life on both is about the same too. I get about 3 1/2 hours on video and about a straight day with just music.
At just 8gb this will not be able to hold much video. If getting and watching movies is gonna be a primary use, then I strongly recommend a higher capacity iPod.
A Problem!
One day after turning off the iPod I went back to it and it wouldn't turn on. A blank black screen is all I saw though I did hear the connect/disconnect sound from the unit. I tried to figure out what to do. In all the years I owned the other iPod I only once had to figure out how to self repair the unit. So it was with this new iPod nano. I tried looking for help through iTunes and thankfully I found out what I needed on-line. The iTune site was NOT easy to navigate for repair and the phone number for service would not be good till the next morning when they opened at 6am.
I was lucky and found an answer to my questions rather quickly after finding a chat area on iTunes. I have now bookmarked the page I needed. I will update if the re-syncing is an ongoing problem. All is well that ends well and that's how the process went for me. I plugged in it in and followed direction. After just a bit of watching some spinning action on the screen, all was back in order.
Music, Sweet Music
The ear buds that came with the iPod nano are white in colour and offer good sound. I like the shape and they were always excellent in staying in my ears.
Placing music on the ipod is essentially the same as it has always been for me using generations 2-5 ipods. We download from iTunes and also directly add music, via CD, to our computer (again using iTunes) and then onto the iPod.

As you scroll to the bottom of this review you will see a check off area that I had to fill in. I'm not happy with it because none of the four options are totally true to this ipOD.
This MP3 Player is best for... required
Beginners - Easy Enough for Tech Newbies
Athletes - Lightweight and Portable, Perfect for the Gym
Music Lovers - High Capacity Storage for an Entire Album Collection
Audio Book Listeners - Download Audio Books and Radio Programs
I believe this is good for a beginner, yet it's also qite lightweight for se in a gym.
The unit does have good capacity but there are those ipods that can carry more. This is also just fine for listening to books. I have a few on it and they don't take up too much space for my music needs.
Though I am envious of a few of the cool little features this iPod nano offers, I won't try and take it back from my wife. She was still in the CD age and now looks forward to being more free and getting excellent sound out of this tiny self contained Apple product.
I have already mentioned and shared my views of many of the features this iPod gives. I particularly like the new video camera option and the voice recorder. I don't know if I'll continue to use the pedometer, but it's good to know I have it. As I use the video option on my other iPod, I know that this one would not have enough storage for my personal movie needs. The song storage though is excellent and I love the Shake and Shuffle feature where I can move on to another song by simply giving a shake back and forth of the iPod rather than having to open my eyes and use the dials.
This is a very easy piece of equipment to start to master. It's intuitive in many ways and this fifth generation iPod is one I can recommend. I would like to have it for my own but, my wife won't give it back. Lucky her, this is a fine and fun piece of audio visual equipment.
I'm actually hoping to win another one very soon. Getting an iPod for free is very cool and you can try too. Just check the rules in the Member Center. Just click it on the bottom of the Epinions.com page.
