The Bottom Line:
This is a great portable device that can be used anywhere. It is well worth the price point and can be used by anyone.
I just recently acquired a 5th generation 16 GB silver Ipod Nano when my Ipod Video broke down. As someone who relies heavily on having music with me, I couldn't live without an Ipod for long and chose this because it was the cheapest alternative available. I waffled between getting an Ipod Touch because of the internet capabilities/apps, an Ipad, or the Nano but finally settled on the Nano which was about 150$ less. I paid 189$ Canadian for it.
Space: I chose the 16 GB because I like to not limit myself with how much music I can hold. At only 50 dollars more than the 8 GB, you can get twice the space. You have to take into account when deciding on space that some of the space will be taken up by the actual programs on the Ipod. For the 16 GB, you can fit roughly 4000 songs.
Design: I was worried that the Nano would be too small and easy to lose in my vortex of a purse or backpack. However, the compact size makes it really convenient for things like a gym or slipping your ipod into a small pocket. It's ultra thin so doesn't create any unnecessary bulges if you choose to wear it in your jeans. I haven't had any problems losing it like I thought I would. You can get the Nano in a variety of colours which makes it very visually appealing.
Features: This is my first Ipod that has had radio capability, which is really exciting! The FM radio that is built in has buttons where you can "tag" songs that you like and later Itunes will identify these songs for you and make them available to purchase. It also allows you to pause a radio program and resume later. Another new feature is the video camera that is integrated into the Ipod. While it is definitely not a video camera with all the bells and whistles, you can do things like add different filters (eg. tunnel vision, security camera etc..) to give your videos that creative flair. The one downside is that there is no option to zoom so don't expect a professional video. Another feature is that this Ipod doesn't require headphones, it actually comes in with a built in speaker which makes sharing your music easier. Not to be forgotten, the Ipod Nano also has a nifty little pedometer (a neat novelty, but not overly useful or accurate) and a voice recorder. Additionally,, the screen size is slightly increased from older models making it easier to see the writing on the screen. Lastly, all the older features like games, stopwatches, calendars, clocks are still included.
Battery: Left on, the battery can last easily a couple hours. The longer you have your Ipod, the less time it lasts.
Durability: The great thing about this Ipod is that it is way less fragile than some of the bigger Ipods. I am someone who can a little rough on my Ipods and drop them more than I like to admit, but due to the lightness and hard aluminum casing, this Ipod can withstand quite a bit. I have dropped it at least 5 times and have never had it turn off on me, scratch, or even skip a beat.
Overall: I honestly think this was a great purchase even though some of the bigger models may come with more gimmicks. The Nano is a great blend of the traditional Ipod with a few added features to make it more contemporary.I really enjoy the added screen size which is now 2.2 inches instead of 2. My one criticism with it, however, is that the trackpad is significantly more sensitive than in the Ipod Video or older models. If you use your Ipod while driving or working out, it can be frustrating trying to navigate when you can't look.
