Why I chose iPod over PSP

byelicr2 Feb 17, 2006
Pros small size, good video, great audio, large capacity, third party peripherals available boost battery life
Cons short battery life for video playback
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If, like me, you're looking for a light weight audio and video player for entertainment while traveling, this is the device for you!
I'm a movie fanatic, not a gamer and while I love music, I have managed to live this long without an MP3 player (although I've wanted one), but when the iPod video and PSP came out, suddenly truly portable VIDEO was available, and THAT I couldn't live without. I went back and forth between the two. The PSP has a bigger, better screen but when it came right down to it, for me at least, the smaller size, large internal memory and variety of content available affordably tipped me over. (I'm also an Apple geek, so I do come at it with an initial predisposition to choose the Apple product, but not to the extent that I would buy it over something which was a clearly superior project and met my needs better.) Personally, I want to be able to watch a movie on an airplane or waiting in a doctor's waiting room without having to haul a whole big box with me. I will say that the video playback time (2-3 hours on a good day) kind of sucks, but now there are peripherals coming out which boost playback time. I'm looking into getting one and think, if they work as billed, they'd be a great addition for those who, for example, want to use their player while traveling. (Pre-iPod I flew with my powerbook, which also has limited battery capacity and takes up a WHOLE lot more space!) I decided if I want a real theater experience, that I can get at home on the television with surround sound. I haven't had problems with the screen scratching, but I've haven't had the player for very long, and I've been careful. Oh, I also loaded my entire audio collection onto it, including music and audio books, and still have memory for a bunch of movies and tv episodes! Besides all that, I didn't have to pay (much) for it.

It's kind of a pyramid scheme, but if you don't mind gaming the system a bit and spending half an hour online, you can get a 60 GB iPod Video for $1. For real. Plug in the URL: premiumipods.freepay.com/?r=27017615 Register. Then scroll down to Free $25 Walmart Gift Card and click. Sign up for free 7 days trial membership of "Connections", then cancel withing 7 days. Then get eight of your friends to do the same thing. It will cost you $1 and iPod Video 60GB is yours. I actually signed up for the Columbia DVD club, spent $30 and got some movies I wanted, but you don't have to even do that. And frankly, if I'd had to pay for the iPod, it still would have been well worth it.
