The 60 Gb Video iPOD: Big Pleasure in a Little Package.
By
James Zaworski
I love music and movies. In 2006, I took the plunge into the world of the iPOD craze and purchased a 60 Gigabyte video iPOD. Two of my nephews had already had a 20 Gigabyte regular iPOD and the other one got a 30 Gigabyte video iPOD. I was sufficiently impressed with their gadgets that I decided to pick up the then latest model, the 60 Gigabyte video iPOD.
I love technology, and gadgets, even though at times they are so expensive. The basic trend in technology these days is smaller, less expensive, and greater performance. With that said, it is most advisable to wait for the new technological devices that come available to be better, less expensive, and full of features. I waited and bought the newest iPOD at the time. Of course now, there is one on the market with twice the storage capacity for about the same price, but I could not wait forever!
What I Like about the 60 Gigabyte Video iPOD.
Storage Capacity. 15,000 Songs!!!
The 60 Gigabyte storage capacity means that you can store up to 15,000 individual songs on this iPOD! Right now, I only have about 5360 songs on mine, one music video, and one movie. Alternately, you could put 30 two gigabyte sized movies on this, or 30,000 two megabyte digital photos, or a combination of video, photos, music files, podcasts, audio books, etc.
I have turned to my iPOD as an alternate storage device for my laptop, as I have about 25 gigabytes available at this time. My hard drive on my laptop was getting rather full, so I put some of the larger files onto the iPOD temporarily. It's an amazing device.
The iPOD itself.
It is small, and can fit in your pocket. The iPOD control panel is a circular touch control center from which you can access the various menus and listen to your songs or watch your movies. The menu itself has music, photos, videos, extras, settings, and shuffle songs as the main menu. Each one of these has a submenu. In music, for example, you highlight that menu item, and center click the circular button in the middle, and then the submenu appears: artists, albums, songs, podcasts, genres, composers, audiobooks. To further access any of these, you then clockwise touch and scroll down, then center click to access the highlighted menu. The five basic things you can physically click are the center button for 'enter', the menu button is at 12:00 position, at 3:00 position is forward/fast forward, 6:00 position is play/pause, and 9:00 position is reverse/rewind. I love the shuffle songs function because you never know what you will get next. This is great on that long commute to work every day for me.
Music and Movie Quality.
This depends on the source of your music, but the music quality converted from CD's and high quality mp3's is excellent. I have not learned how to convert movie files yet, but the two videos I do have, both purchased from iTunes, are excellent quality. Of course, it seems silly to watch a movie on a 2.5 x 2.5" screen, but its fun to squint at.
Durability.
I have been using this iPOD daily since I got it, for one year straight. So far, there is no sign of it slowing down. It has been to the mountains, with me on my archaeology digs in all kinds of weather, on the airplane to Hong Kong, with me in Japan, on trains and subways, and now it is with me on my holiday in China. As long as it remains powered up, it never fails to please!
Multi-function Capability/Computer Interface/Installation/Compatibility.
The iPOD connects to the computer via a USB cable/USB port, which connects to the iPOD itself. This is the basic interface for the iPOD, and is also the way to charge the iPOD battery. It takes about two or three hours to charge it up.
The iPOD is of course compatible with Mac and with Windows PC's. The software installation CD-ROM comes with it, and it is pretty self explanatory about how to install the software and then connect the device. Windows is my operating system, and the iPOD is extremely Windows friendly.
iTunes Interface.
The iTunes interface is your basic command and control center by which you can import your purchased songs directly from your CD's or from your computer hard drive. There is a procedure by which you can import the songs and convert them to the iPOD specially compressed format, AAC format.
iTunes puts your files into the iTunes library after they are converted, and from there, you can drag and drop the music files, podcasts, audio books, movies, etc, directly to the iPOD icon on the left hand side of the iTunes screen. It is complicated at first, but with a little fiddling with it you will know how to do it like a professional.
Updates.
iTunes interface will periodically check for updates. In fact, mine is downloading the newest version of iTunes, version 7.3.1.
iTunes Store.
iTunes is also a big money maker for Apple, as it now offers a wide variety of music for sale, to download directly to your library and iPOD. The same goes with movies, although they don't have everything. I actually purchased and downloaded the movie Apocalypto and the music video Don't Worry, Be Happy by Bobby Mcferrin a few weeks ago. I also have purchased about 200 songs, some individually (they cost about $0.99 each), and by the CD (they cost less this way, sometimes as cheap as $5.99 for a whole CD).
As I mentioned before, there are many formats you can play on your iPOD, and you can get free podcasts from the iTunes store. I now regularly download and update for free my subscriptions to CNN, NPR, The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, Elementary Mandarin and Elementary Japanese, on a daily basis. It is a great way to keep informed when you are on the run, and have no time to catch the news. You can swiftly put the files onto your iPOD and listen to them on the Tobu Tojo Line in Japan (the crazy train I take to get to work every day!).
Color Choice.
This iPOD comes in Black or White. I have a white one.
Carrying case.
Mine has a nice and protective carrying case to keep it safe from scratches on the screen.
Battery Life.
Mine lasted about 8 hours on the flight from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. I understand the newest one now can last up to 14 hours. Incredible.
Other features.
From a calendar, games, alarm clock, address book, stopwatch, screen settings, power saving and lighting settings, this iPOD is chocked full of extras.
What I Don't Like About the 60 Gigabyte Video iPOD.
Price.
I paid a whopping $375 for my iPOD, and that was after a $25 coupon I had from Amazon.com Since then, the 60 Gb iPOD has gone down in price, and you should be able to pick it up for about $75 to 100 less than what I paid. For the same price as I paid originally, you can buy the 80 Gb or maybe the 120 Gb iPOD!!!
File Sharing Protection.
This is really an annoying aspect of iTunes. Yes, it is supposed to ensure honesty and integrity and the non-sharing of songs. But, in my case, I asked my nephew, who had my collection of CD's, to put my music onto the iPOD from his computer, because I did not yet know how to use this new technology and did not have time then to do it. So, he authorized his computer to upload and convert all of the music files of mine onto my iPOD. Of course, since then I have gone overseas to teach in Japan, and brought my laptop with me. I authorized my computer, but now cannot share any of the files from my iPOD to my computer. It's simply not fair. Also, vice versa, I have purchased about 200 iTunes songs and cannot share these purchased songs with my nephew. I understand the principle in which this file protection was developed, but in this case there should be some further authorization by which I can get my music from my iPOD and also share music I have purchased with my nephew.
Adding Video or Photo content without erasing everything.
I still haven't figured out how to do this. When I try to add a photo or photo files to the iPOD, it reminds me that if I do this, I will wipe out all of my songs and movies and files on the iPOD! There has to be an easy way to do this without wiping it clean.
However, all in all, I love my iPOD! I have 17.4 days of continuous music, 2 hours of video, about 15 hours of podcasts, 20 hours of audio books, and lots of photos to look at.
It's an excellent and innovative piece of technology that I use every day, it is small and portable, compact and durable, and offers hours and days, in fact, of enjoyment.
