SCRATCHES.

The Bottom Line:
Apart from the scratch issue this is a near perfect mobile multimedia product. I love it.
I bought my original iPod when they first became available for PC owners. I had jealousy eyed the Apple Mac crowd's new toy for ages while growing frustrated with my Creative 256MB MP3 player. When I bought my original 20 GB iPod in September 2002, the cashier at Best Buy who rang me up actually asked, "What's an iPod?" Imagine getting that question today.
The iPod "owns" the MP3 player space for a reason. The navigation on the iPod is sheer joy to play with. This goes double for navigating photos as far as I'm concerned. I uploaded 12,000 photos to my iPod and zooming through all the pictures at high speed is wonderful. It's so nice having everything with me. The 60 gig iPod Video is a true multimedia device. I have 4,000 songs, 12,000 photos, 30 videos and about 25 audiobooks at my fingertips. This is great for the 2.5 hours I have to commute to-and-from San Francisco everyday.
Now here's the bad news about the iPod Video unit and my primary reason for posting this review. Although the black iPod is desirable, the case is VERY easily scratched. I suggest getting yourself the white version which apparently shows less scratching.
I bought a $35 case at the same time I bought my iPod. Even popping my iPod into the case caused the exterior to get scratched, including the screen. I mean -- what the hell? The mere act of handling the black iPod Video leaves fingerprints and scratches on the case. Why can't Apple make the iPod exterior just a little more durable? For this reason I give the product 4 stars versus 5. Without the scratch issue (Google for a plethora of complaints), this product would definitely rate a 5.
Right now, I intend on keeping my new toy in a heavy rubberized case permanently. If the protective screen gets too scratched, I'll just switch that out. My original iPod is almost four years old and aside from the 8 hour battery life slipping to 4 hours, it's still going strong. I hope this one does as well.
