A cool mp4 player but there are better out there

Pros can play videos, good music quality, good screen
Cons scratches too easy, 2 hour battery life with videos
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I would suggest this to someone who wants the newest technology and the space, NOT TO ATHLETES because of the hard drive
I received my apple iPod 30 GB on Christmas of 2005 and have had to replace it once about 2 months down the line.

Features:

Apples 5th generation iPod has some nice features including: Video capability, Pictures, 4 games, a calendar, address book, notes (these cannot be edited through the iPod but instead have to be synchronized with Microsoft Outlook). Also, a stopwatch, and the ability to create playlists within the iPod itself (versus using iTunes to create playlists for you)

Body:

The body is a lot slimmer than the old 4th generation iPod, it is only 3/4 of in inch or so thick. Apple has also offered the 5th generation IPod in black versus the traditional white.

When you first pick it up, the iPod feels very sturdy and durable, but is easily SCRATCHABLE!!! The case that apple provides is not very good at protecting the iPod from scratches. I HIGHLY RECOMEND that you purchase an actual case to put your iPod in, and also to leave on or buy new clear cover for the front so if your case scratches up your iPod, it will only scratch the plastic.

Screen:

The screen is very nice, small but has a clear crisp picture. At night the backlight is very strong and can even be used as a makeshift flashlight to find a keyhole or an item you dropped, etc.

Using your iPod:

The iPod was built for simple operation. All you do is use the wheel to scroll to your option and push the center button. There is also a "hold" switch located on the very top of the iPod so if you don't want the controls to be touched, you put the switch to hold and the front controls are useless until you flip the switch back to the original position.

Battery:

The battery has very low life for videos. The average iPod can put out 8 hours of music with no equalizer and only 2 hours of video. The reason is that the hard drive is constantly spinning to read the video, which in turn drains the battery.

Videos:

Videos, the reason most people look at 5th generation iPod. The videos I must say are very sharp, it is not very hard to view at all. Encoding (changing videos to the correct format on the other hand can be tricky). Your iPod is not limited to the videos that iTunes has, if you have a home movie or video clips, etc. that you want to put on your iPod, it has to be in ".mp4" format. There are many ways to do this; one that I use would be "videora iPod converter". This program is a pretty easy way to get videos onto your iPod. I have about 20 videos on my iPod, a few of them have subtitles and I can read them pretty easily.

iPod Exchange Program:

If your iPod happens to break down, you can call a number and wait anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour waiting for a person to answer and go through "well what version is your iTunes, well what BIOS version do you have (BIOS Basic Input Output System) if you don't have the newest ones then they will tell you to install them and call if it doesn't fix it (these "fixes" rarely work) then if you say yes to those, then they will have you reformat your iPod which completely erases the hard drive and would take care of any software issues within the iPod. If its a hardware issue, that will be a waste of time. After this, they finally give you a link to apple where you can fill out an online form where you explain the problem, and you get an empty box to send your iPod out and get a brand new unit within 5 days. Yes this can be a hastle, or if you have an iPod store near you, visit them and explain your problem to them and they can replace it for you there on site.

What I think:

I think that apple made a very nice product but if you are planning to buy just for the videos than I would not suggest it, there are many nice mp3 and mp4 players out there that do not cost as much as the iPod, and have more features. One that I would highly suggest is the Creative Zen Micro because it has many other features such as a microphone, FM tuner, FM tuner recorder, and it also has an easily readable face. You can get a microphone and a FM tuner for your iPod Video, but it will cost you extra, and I have no clue as to the quality.
I used to own the older Zen Micro with the black and white screen and even though newer technology is out, I would still recommend this player to anyone who doesn't have a HUGE library of music.
