30 GB iPod; I Would Buy This Rather Than the 60 GB or Larger!!

Pros Bright screen, clear picture in videos
Cons Temperamental on off switch. small vid screen.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I've now had experience with my original 60GB iPod and now recently with my daughters 30GB iPod. If I were making a purchase today I would go for the 30GB.
My daughter and I went shopping for an iPod about half a year ago. She picked out the 30GB in white. She took right to it understanding how it worked through experimentation and using the Quick Guide that came with the iPod. I have a 60GB and it took me a while to get the total hang of it but the Quick Guides iPod issues now are very helpful.

The 30 GB is the same size as the 60GB at 2 1/2"x 3 3/4". When I received mine as a prize in an Epinions.com I wasn't sure how much I would use it. I use it more and more all the time including having a library of 14 movies. Though I don't feel anyone needs a 60 GB right away I believe the 30GB even if it is pricey should be the first iPod purchased. The nano versions don't hold near enough for my liking.

This 30 GB has one full length movie and a couple-a-few videos on it. It also has 899 songs. With all that the iPod hasn't done more than dent its capacity. I like that I can get those figures right off the iPod itself. This one still has 23.2 GB available!

Unfortunately my daughter plugged her iPod into my PC and wound up loading all my music and the 12 or more movies I had at the time. Her iPod held everything I had stored in my iPod and still had planty of space to add much more.

She and I have, since then, found out how to check particulars we don't want and set the iTunes to not give everything in my library to my daughters. All is now good. The batteries on the 30 GB are fully charged after an hour or two plugged into a 120v outlet. Videos drain the iPod in about three or four hours. If just music is played on and off the battery lasts a couple of days.

The iPod came with the white earbuds a docking adapter and USB connectors. It also came with the Quick Start guide that does take a step by step approach to tutoring how to use the iPod. That's great for first timers. My daughter liked it too.

I compare the two iPods, mine the 60 GB that's now three years old and hers the 30GB that's less than a year. Her iPod has much brighter lighting. I set mine all the way up under settings and it's not nearly as good as this one. This one also has a perfect screen after half a year as compared to the 60GB that now has lines and spots of dead areas on it. The contrast on the 30GB is incredibly clear and distinct making for an excellent picture on the 2 1/4" x 1 7/8" screen. That may seem much too small to watch a movie to most people but I enjoy doing so most every night as I go to sleep watching and then listening to the iPod.

I like that there is a wide screen option or full screen. Much of the sides of the film is lost using full screen but truth be told the wide screen makes the picture very small. I use full screen even though I usually prefer wide screen. Both the 30 and the 60 have the same size screen.

The buds that came with the iPod are still in good shape. No need to get new ones. My daughter is happy with hers. I upgraded to Bose earbuds for $100 and I'm glad I did. I can hear a difference in quality. That said, I believe the sound quality on the 30GB as better than the older 60GB. Is that just a perception or is it real. I believe it's real!

I'll add that I am truly amazed at the sound quality, particularly on the movies. I feel like I'm in one of those Doby Sound theatres.

I am disappointed however when playing the iPod through our home system. There is a very noticable difference between a CD being played through and the same track coming through my iPod. I was told that may have to do with the compressed format of MP3s and how I put the music on the iPod. Unfortunately that's all out of my league. I'll have to wait for my daughter to look into it and teach me more about it.

Like my iPod. This one has many of the very same features that includes finding songs by song title, album, title, artist or genre. Making playlists was easy for me and my daughter does too doing so with even more ease than I did.

I'm not sure if this next feature was an upgrade in software or something the 30GB does over the 60GB. She has a search function where I can type in a letter or more and that automatically has the iPod searching for a particular song or whatever for me. Cool it is!!

It's a funny thing and I thought it just me. I have trouble getting the iPod to shut off at times. I press the wheels bottom and it doesn't shut off the screen. My daughter has the same problem with the 30GB. We can't figure it out. It shuts off most of the time without a prob. Other times it just stays on.

The other negative is that her iPod froze up one time. She took my advice and let the iPod's batteries die shutting down the iPod. Once it was recharged the iPod must have reset itself and was ready to go.

The iPod has a safety button on top that locks the iPods setting where they are. It the iPod is on, it won't shut off or if it is off, it will not turn on by an inadvertent bump or whatever. This is a good feature.

I don't use my games much but my daughter likes the games solitaire, Brick and parachute. These games are too slow and don't present much challenge. That said I usually lose. Both units have the same games. She particularly likes the music quiz game where the iPod gives clues of songs in the iPod. You must guess the song that's in your library. It's harder than you think! This game may be more appealing to people who take their music more seriously than I do.

The wheels on iPods are sensitive. Maybe I'm just a bull in a China closet but when I use my daughters iPod or mine, I still over and under steer the thing. It sometimes drives me nuts.

Overall I was impressed with the 30 GB. Though it holds 1/2 of what mine does it still has plenty of storage space. The screen is very bright and the sound clear. The screen has stayed in excellent shape even without a protector for over it.

If I were going to go out and purchase a new iPod I would go for the 30GB because it has everything the 60GB has except for extra space. Let me tell ya the 30GB has more space than most people need.
