Though the 30GB version of the iPod is no longer in production by Apple, replaced by 40GB, it can be picked up used from a variety of sources. I got mine refurbished from the apple store www.apple.com for roughly $300. When brand new that cost well over $400, that is a steal.
The iPod is essentially an external hardrive with jukebox capabilities. 30GB is a lot space for songs, programs, video files, documents, or whatever, and the Fire Wire connection ensures that data will travel rapidly from your CPU to the iPod.
Managing music is easy. Use iTunes to manage content on the iPod, adding, arranging or deleting songs, simply by dragging and dropping song files to the iPod playlist. The primary downside to the iPod, that I have found, is that there is no native mechanism for transferring songs back from iPod back to your CPU. However, a variety of programs available on the internet work for this.
All in all iPod is a masterpiece. Though, the price tag may seem steep, you will forget spending the money, once you get plugged into iPod.
