Absolutely the standard for portable music
Pros
The standard others emulate, great design, great performance, great sound, great variety of add-ons.
Cons
PC type vendors may offer cheaper devices. Belt clip too easy to slip off belt.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
ePinions menu limited. iPod does under 10 Hours but surely much more than 5. Great for music AND all types of audio content AND PDA functionality.
I am the proud owner of the iPod 30 GB, which I have had for the last 7 months. I got it personalized (laser engraving on the back available from Apple Store online) and it arrived much sooner than I expected, and proved to be even better designed and functional a product than I had hoped.
The sound quality, ease of use, no moving parts (at least on the outside) etc. make it a joy to use. It came with a great set of headphones - and a corded remote control that can plug between the device and the headphones.
I already owned a decent set of light Panasonic noise cancelling headphones, so I have been able to enjoy the iPod on frequent flights, from NY to Florida and back, and from NY/US to Pakistan and back.
The latter can be 15-22 hours of flying/travel time, and including the naps and meals, and landings and take-off times even in those flights I have not run out of batteries.
The fact that it also syncs to Apple's iCal and AddressBook apps means all the info I would have in my Palm Pilot, including schedules, contacts and even memos and text to read, are right there for me to read.
My next ideal version of the iPod would be a Palm compatible PDA and a color display to show video images, all in one so I can use FireWire and take mini-movies with me to watch, e.g. mini-versions of TiVo type recordings of TV shows I would not otherwise have time to watch.
My only major complaint with the version I got is about the carrying case. I am happy Apple includes a high quality and sturdy carrying case with belt clip, but the clip has a very rounded lip so more once the iPod has slipped off when I am sitting in the car and would drop to the floor if I got out without noticing it. Other than that, it is a great device and iTunes with the Apple Music Store are a joy to use.
