Cons -Skips -Poor Apple Support -Expensive -Scratches -Long cords -Software difficult to use for PC
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Skips during ANY light to moderate movement or exercise. You are paying extra dollars for the Apple brand not technology. Apple provides poor customer support.
My husband recently gave me a 10GB iPod. In the Apple retail store in Costa Mesa, CA, my husband was informed by the store "Genius" the iPod was skip free and would not skip during exercise or running. (The "Genius" stated I could go as far as 'jumping off a building' before the iPod would skip)

I am a marathon runner, and I run about and move like anyone who uses portable devices! 14 to 16 minutes into my first run with my new iPod, the device began to skip. I had to stop my run and reboot the device. 14 to 16 minutes later, the device began to skip again and froze up completely. Frustrated, I called the Apple store, and they suggested I trouble shoot the device on Apple.com and download the new OS that had just been released that week. After doing so and 14-16 minutes into my next run, the iPod skipped and froze (it also skipped while I sat on a stationary bike in the gym).

I visited the Apple store with my iPod in Newport Beach, CA (at Fashion Island), and they offered to do a diagnostic test on the device for $50 to identify the problem. I was surprised when the "Genius" added other folks had complained of their iPods skipping during exercise. We asked why Apple claims on the iPod box the device has 20 minutes skip-free protection (on Apple.com it now says 25). Unable to answer our question, the "Genius" again offered the $50 diagnostic test option. Since we had already spent $299 on the device, we declined to spend the additional $50 and left the store.

With no other recourse, we sent the iPod to Apple in Cupertino, CA to Steve Jobs' attention detailing our dissatisfaction. Shortly after, we received a call from Executive Relations stating they had returned our same device to our residence, and suggested we trouble shoot the iPod on Apple.com. In addition, we could pay for a $50 diagnostic test to identify and fix the problem (Great, right back where we started).

In all the documentation Apple provides, it states the iPod takes two seconds to write the buffer in the hard RAM. But when it skips, it takes 40 seconds for it to rewrite from the hard drive to the RAM. The hard RAM is supposed to provide 25 minutes of skip protection. Once it starts skipping, it won't stop until you reboot.

There are numerous articles on the internet, one on Macworld.com where Steve Jobs himself claims the iPod is skip free:

In addition, Burton Snowboards has designed a snowboard jacket specifically to hold the iPod device while snowboarding:

I would not want to be a snowboard enthusiast who has to stop and reboot his/her iPod while racing down a mountain!

We were misled by Apple marketing, the Apple retail stores, Mr. Jobs' claims, the poor support and customer service we received from Apple, and other claims by Apple partners that develop and sell Apple solutions (and claim the iPod does not skip):

The iPod devices skip, plain and simple. A fatal flaw for any portable device. However, this is a VERY expensive portable device that claims to be skip free. And that's the whole point of PORTABLE devices: You move around with them because they are portable!

I have to admit after my husband gave me my 10GB iPod (and before I discovered the device skips), I bought him a 15GB iPod for $399. Needless to say, his skips as well. Now, we have over $700 invested in these overpriced, faulty portable devices.

Please save your hard-earned dollars. There are other, less expensive MP3 players on the market. I'll trade you any day!
