The Bottom Line:
Many apps. Blue tooth capability. Inexpensive.
Hubby has a new toy , the Apple Iphone 8 g (gigabytes). It measures 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 and 3/8" thick. His case was $39.00. The no glare screen is 2" x 3" and I don't believe it has left his hands other than when he was sleeping or eating since he came home with it.
I am not any kind of electronics geek. I am still learning how to use my little cell phone. BUT, this was pretty darn amazing! The screen is a touch screen and it scrolls when you move your finger over the screen. A very strange affect. I found the call quality and call recetion nice and clear here in South Florida with only a few dead zones.
It offers very good data access. I canget to any web site, acess my eamil, check weather, restaurants, maps and even identify song names and singers if I want directly from my car radio by holding the phone up to the speakers when the song is playing and purchase them through iTunes.
You can use it as a cell phone but it also offers zillions of what is called apps or applications. Applications can be access to weather, restaurants, GPS, internet access i.e. your emails, music storage (up to 8 gigabytes of music). Hubby has been loading music endlessly. I've loaded a few of my favoarite Willie Nelson songs. The iPhone has some really silly apps like a shotgun, "lock, load and fire". You get the appropriate sounds. Hubs also is very fond of the handy level which can be held upright or horizontal. He brags about the 5,000 drink recipe calculator. It offers free WiFi locator. speedometer, a no zoom limited camera, compass, language translation ability (a lot he said, Albanian through Viet namese). It has a built-in iPod and 8 gigs of memory.
I love that you can zoom in, zoom out and use it sideways when taking a picture or looking ta a site.It does exactly what the commercials show you.
The resolution is good, and you can enlarge the items on the screen which is excellent for those of us who use reading glasses. One button on the bottom takes you back home .
Font choices are small medium larges and even extra large. You can view your ATT account information, change your voicemail password you can see your email accounts, delete any you want and the display is nice and large so you can see who is emailing you just select pencil/paper for this app you can bookmark, see several screens, delete and hear the funny sound affect as stuff goes into the little garbage can. This whole iPhone thing is extremely entertaining.
You can choose from a variety of ring tones that are included, you can choose wallpaper or use your own photos. The clock includes a stop watch, a time, and an alarm and you can select multiple time zones. If you travel or call people in other time zones this is very handy. Photo resolution is good, I'm still trying to figure out how to email myself the photos.
These are all free "apps" You can buy other "apps" are on the online store for up to about $4.00 to $29.99. You can locate Triple AAA discounts too, very handy. If you want to purchase an app you can consider digital Goldfish for .99, knitting for $2.99, the movie Angels & Demons for $4.99, Yetissports for $2.99 and endless others. Each of these has reviews you can read on the iPhone before purchasing.
You can use a camera, check your stocks, listen to music, check YouTube, check maps, do ring tones, do turkey calls (a must have, right?), tip calculator, birthday reminders, currency exchange. Go to Utilites for Flashlight or Spell Check, look at Handy Carpenter has a level) and Internet browsing. You can see why this is so appealing to so many people on so many levels.
For $9.00 you get 3 screen protectors (important) and a cleaning cloth. You don't want anything on the screen that might imprint or etch it. Headphones are free so Hubs can listen to music, radio or tv shows at work. Uh oh...sounds dangerous. It also comes with a USB/AC charger.
Two years ago people were standing on line to pay $500.00 for this new gadget. Hubby only paid $99.00 since he was already an ATT customer. It was an upgrade and his plan was eligible for the upgrade. He chose black but I would suggest getting a cover for it in a color so as not to mix it up with everyone elses phones and also to make it easier to find than amongst other items on desks or tables cell phones.
To use the typing feature You can go to the Web and a keyboard will appear after you tap the dialogue box. This shows up on any app that requires typing. It will temporarily turn off the touch screen so that you don't press the touch pad and activate something. The keyboard is in a small spot at the bottom of a vertical page, it's a little small for larger fingers like my husbands but works well for little old me.
There are tons of games, Speed Box, The Moron Test (reduced from $2.99 to only .99!). I guess you can see why he has hardly put this down.
The clock has a stop watch, a time, and an alarm. It lets you select multiple time zones so if you make long distance calls or travel a lot this is perfect for your needs. Remember you get currency exchange.
The iPhone will give you 10 hours of talk time on GSM, and up to 5 hours of talk time on 3G, You get 5 to 6 hours for web browsing it states and it will function in standby for up to 12 days. It has strong internal antennae giving it great reception in most areas. You can also take photos and email them as well.
It's extremely easy to use and you can go to online tutorials for help. This is a quote from my husband. He set me down in front of it, he likes to challenge my limited tech ability. I must say the iPhone is interesting and certainly has a myriad of things to keep you busy. It's like a super toy. Just touch the screen and you feel like some sort of magician. You scroll away and watch a myriad of apps you can choose from.
Hubby purchased this because he was ready for an upgrade and all the other guys in the office had them. Can we say someone is living his childhood again? The only other version is the 16 gig version and the iPhone is only made by Apple for ATT.
