Best phone, made even better...

Pros Video, Speed improvements, Longer battery life, compass sensor, voice commands (without need for training)
Cons Price
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Latest gadget for the technophile and beyond...  Easily the best phone on the market in terms of hardware, and software is unmatched (especially with inclusion of app store)
With the release of the latest Apple iPhone 3Gs, I was ambivalent about upgrading from my existing iPhone 3G which I was very happy with.  The main differences between the 3Gs and the 3G are a new higher resolution (3 megapixel) autofocus camera, ability to record 640x480 video, voice commands (dial ..., play song by ..., etc.), a new compass sensor, option for 16gb or 32gb memory, a slightly longer battery life, and a faster processor.  Otherwise these phones are identical in both software and hardware.  Depending on your view, these features may or may not seem very impressive or worthwhile upgrades.  I therefore decided to test the phone and see whether it would be worth the added upgrade costs.  After deciding to purchase the phone and using it over the past week, here are my initial impressions:
1. The best new feature is the video capability.  The video and audio quality are excellent and you can take video in both portrait and landscape and the phone adjusts on the playback (even on a desktop).
2. The camera is a bit better, but not the reason to upgrade in my view.
3. Speed is likely the next best thing about the phone, and this has been confirmed by formal lab testing showing the 3Gs being 2-3 times faster than the 3G and two times faster than the new Palm Pre.  Apps load much more quickly with little lag, webpages are almost instantaneous (assuming a good internet connection), and GPS maps render instantly.
4. Battery life is noticeably better, but again not a reason to upgrade since the 3G gave me a full days use, while the 3Gs is unlikely to get me through 2 full days thereby requiring a nightly charge.
5. The compass provides one may purpose thus far.  When using google maps, it now includes an arrow showing you which direction you are facing.  While this may seem trivial, previously you had to walk in one direction to see which way the map was moving to know your directions.
6. Voice control is also a nice feature, but not a reason to upgrade.

All in all, the phone is an evolutionary step forward and continues to be the best phone on the market.
