So I finally sold my first generation Iphone on ebay to an apple junkie who said it was a classic. Funny guy. Reason? To Upgrade of course, I wanted the new awesome 3GS. Now that I have it, here are a few things on this model. First of all, there is no feelable difference over the 3g version (my wife has it). In fact you would think its exactly the same, not even a 3GS sign on the phone itself. However, there is one noticeable factor – its so much faster to load any application, even though the apps look and feel exactly the same. This is expecially true for heavier web pages, if you browse a lot on your iphone. Videos too, needless to mention, are much smoother. Overall, though, the first thing you will notice is that its super-fast just to start up the phone.
Other than that, the dimensions, height and width of the 3GS is exactly the same as the 3G model. The best part of this is all accessories for the earlier model will work perfectly on 3GS (thanks apple). The other great selling factor other than the speed? The well marketed camera of course. Its really a huge improvement over the 3G camera at 3 megapixels. What I especially like is the video feature – its as if the screen is made to perfectly fit the videos taken by the IPhone. Resolution looks good on the mini phone and the transition between the images are smooth. However, we are still lightyears away from replacing digital cameras with phone cameras – there is no flash, and even though there is auto-focus feature without flash your camera is only good in the perfectly lighted places.
But the video feature is a nice touch, even though other phones have had it for a while IPhone was really lacking on this department. What is disappointing is to download a 1 dollar program in order to be able to use the zoom feature of your camera. Really stupid thing to require from someone who just signed up 2000 dollar 2 year contract to buy your phone for 200. Also disappointing is that only 3GS has features common to other phones for a while now – like mm messaging, voice dialing.
Beyond what I just described there are no other improvements on the 3GS. Yes, its nice to have 600mhz and 256 ram in your palm, but the differences are only noticeable if you own the first generation of the IPhone. If you have a 3G, wait until the next model, there is no reason to upgrade yet. But the first generation is outdated now compared to this version.
Overall Iphone itself is an amazing gadget for any tech junkie or anyone who wants move than a phone. Personally I don't like the monthly cost - a basic plan plus internet will run you 100 a month minimum. And this doesn't include text messaging - 20 cents per messege! You can buy 200 messages for 5 bucks a month, but it does not include international messeging, which is something I use often. And ATT does not have any international messeging service - so if you send messeges oversees, 5 bucks a month plan is useless for you. Iphone is awesome, but it costs my friends.
But when you think about everything this thing does, and if you were to buy all of these one by one, it can be quite a bargain. It has GPS, 150 for a good one by itself, MP3 player, another 150 for the ipod, video player, another 100, or 250 if you buy a mp3+video player. I am going to stop counting here - you get my point. Iphone is worth every penny, even though ATT makes sure you pay every penny that its worth.
