iPhone email very disappointing, over shadows the other great features...
Pros
Very well conceived in just about every other way...
Cons
Bare-bones email features that fill the corporate (former) Blackberry user with disappointment and sadness.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
If you rely on knowing that an important email has arrived, and you can't constantly be looking at your phone to check - you're going to be disappointed.
Right at the top of this review, which is misleadingly positive, I want to say that the iPhone is a great device. It is precisely this fact that makes what I'm about to write below that much more frustrating.
I simply cannot believe how limited the mail app is on the iPhone. I had very high hopes given my experiences with my other Apple products, but the lack of filtering and notification rules in the iPhone mail is extremely disappointing.
Sadly, I will be returning my iPhone to AT&T tomorrow or Saturday - even though I love having access to all the apps and extra features - the mail app is just too basic to be useful to me (and I'll bet to others).
Apple, Steve J. - Here's the deal: I've been a Blackberry user for several years (and there are lots and lots of us...), but I'm very unhappy with Blackberry's lack of innovation beyond their email features and new handset, so I figured I'd try out your iPhone.
I just can't believe how simple (in a bad way!) the iPhone email app is!! I need to be notified of other messages that I filter on my desktop (running Outlook) into other folders besides my inbox. I also need to be able to let other messages arrive silently to my iPhone, but be loudly told about other messages that are important.
This is possible with the Blackberry via the "make level-1" feature. I use this extensively as a 'poor mans pager' for work email. I have filters that trigger special notifications on the Blackberry itself when customers or my boss email me directly, or when certain key words appear in customer support email (i.e. critical, urgent, 'high priority', 'network down', etc).
If you want the iPhone to be taken seriously in the corporate world, it HAS GOT TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS!!!
You are so close - the iPhone does literally everything else we need - except this...
